It was explained to me once that having a flatplane V8 engine like the one in my Esprit is like having two four cylinder engines so no typical V8 cross plane engine burble.

Although Ferarri always made the flatplane sound an awful lot better than the Lotus engine.

Main reason for crossplane is to balance the inertial forces. It sounds rougher but is smoother - flat plan is rougher but sounds smoother.

Had a Stag years ago that got me into V8' s. Loved the burble. A lot of the newer Mercedes and Audi V8's always sound as if they have a missfire, or firing in the wrong order.
