Check Hybrid, Check VSC, Check ECB

Recommended Posts

I realise these errors have been covered multiple times, just wondered if anyone has any ideas on my specific issue.

over the last 6 months or so I have had the dreaded Check Hybrid message pop up generally when I am in stop/start queuing traffic for an extended period of time.  the arrows showing the charging/where the power is from stop showing on the screen but the hybrid Battery display continues to show it charging and discharging as normal and the power is not affected.  Following this I sometimes get the Check VSC, Check ECB and the ABS lights coming on but only when I lift of the accelerator to coast, they generally stay on under light throttle but will go out under med/heavy throttle.  The check hybrid message stays on throughout this.

After a week or so the messages disappear but come on again the next time I am in queueing traffic.  the hybrid system has always been fine despite the messages.  I should really take it to Lexus for a diagnosis but I have little confidence in my local dealer (Woodford) any suggestions welcomed....

Anyway, it's MOT time and I currently have the Check Hybrid message and the EML on, is there a way of turning this off without using a computer as I understand it will be an MOT failure?

Manay thanks....

In very general terms, these symptoms can be an indication that the 12V Battery is failing.

If you want a more in-depth diagnosis then we have to have more information. At the very least we need OBD2 fault codes to work with but, as this is a hybrid issue I doubt very much that a generic code reader will be of much use because these codes will be Toyota/Lexus-specific, although it may allow you to reset the warning lights.

If you own a laptop you can get a miniVCI cable for about £20 from eBay and install Techstream, then let us know what it finds.

Plus one for the above. If you own a Toyota/Lexus hybrid or "even a non hybrid" a mini VCI cable and the software that comes with it are a must have.
Not only will it read all of the information available in the cars systems it will enable you to alter dealer options without going to the dealer, and to do service tasks such as bleeding the brakes, and so much more.
It will pay for it's self many time over the first time you use it saving all the guess work on what is wrong, and what faults are pending.

Thanks, I will get one ordered.

is there a way of resetting the Engine management light in the mean time, on some cars you can reset it by unlocking the car whilst standing on one leg and opening the window at the same time (I may have made that up but there is sometimes a certain sequence of events that will reset it.)

You can reset the warning lights by connecting pins 13 & 4 on the OBD socket with a paper clip or similar. However you should not do this until you know what codes are stored

First i would replace 12V Battery to eliminate potential faults triggered by bad unit. This is actually very common cause to trigger the warnings you have,

Second, go on fleabay and get yourself chinese techstream copy. It costs around £20 including the cable. It requires some IT knowledge and a laptop to install, but once there, you will be able to pretty much diagnose everything on your car. It works like a charm and I have used it successfully on SC430, GS430, GS450h and LS460 to diagnose and fix various EML, ABS and TSC related issues. I haven't tried it yet on my GS250 but will give it a go over the weekend.

Without the codes, it's difficult to impossible to say what's wrong..
