and also, does anybody actually KNOW if the Ls600 battery pack / the Inverter is it ?, can be repaired piecemeal like I have read on here that the Prius can ?

Thanks

I'm just trying to get some sensible feel for buying an older, incredibly inexpensive ( to my mind ) Ls600

Why don`t you ask Richard at Hybrid Battery Solutions?

IS300h 😀 fake leather .. cheap nasty interior similar to CT.. overpriced and underpowered slug is impressive indeed..

I would consider LS460. It's a buyers market at the moment and they are very good value for money. Compared to LS600, it will have similar mpg, performance and toys if you can find one with RSR package. No worries about ageing hybrid system, lower purchase price..

LS430 may be little bit better built, but it has it's own problems and they are getting bit old now. Also very difficult to find good one at the right price.

Yes I thought the same re the IS and having not owned anything with less than 6 cylinders for 20 years there is no bigger engine snob than me but I have nothing to gain from making up how I feel about the IS, I was more than ready and willing to hate it but as I said there are some very different things about driving an old car v a newer one and knowing what I know now I’m not sure I’d go back to something like a 400/460/600 of a certain age. If you want something 6 cylinders or more I’d look at a more recent GS450 - the issue here of course being the extra cost potentially of the GS.

Re: Contact from HBS Website : I'm thinking to buy a Lexus Ls600 and concerned that the Battery welfare and longevity will be an issue for me, purchasing an older car  Are these batteries repairable, replaceable economically at the end of normal life ( whatever that is ) ?Thank youMB - Lexus Ls600

Going back to TPMS...….as we know, it has been mandatory on all new vehicles manufactured after 1st Jan 2015.  Personally, I like it.  A couple of years ago I was driving round Newcastle with the car 'full to the gunwales' with stuff for Xmas. The TPMS warning illuminated and, on the display, indicated that one tyre had dropped to 25psi.  A check on my phone showed that the nearest tyre fitter was just round the corner so I popped in and they found a nail in the tread.  A quick plug repair and I was on my way. Much more convenient than discovering the problem, at speed, on the motorway. Then having to unload everything from the boot to get to the spare wheel - on the hard shoulder.

The problem, of course, is when the transducers play up or the batteries need replacing. Replacements are expensive; but I think we all need to remember that we have chosen to drive 'top of the range' luxury cars. It doesn't matter how much we paid for them - spares are not cheap. Luckily, they don't go wrong very often.

As far as hybrid batteries are concerned; my local Lexus dealer (in The Hague) tells me that they have very few problems with them. If it is just an individual cell, then that can be replaced on its own. There are YouTube videos on this.

These specialists in the UK can and do repair / replace individual cells in Lexus models other than the Ls600 it would seem ............... and I'm assuming ( I know that's dangerous ) that for some reason, whilst they can other Lexus cars they just cannot with the Ls600

Can you please ask your Hague agent if this applies to the Ls600 too ?

Re longevity, I did post the Honest John piece earlier that a 2009 car at 135k miles had suffered the fate in 2017

I suppose if the 4-5k is looked at from another angle the angle might alter perspective, so anyone any idea how much electricity running costs would be on an LS 600 per mile? (equate with mpg petrol) then add 4-5k onto that at 300k, Im sure some maths literate can work it out! (not me)

aha, are you maybe suggesting that the Ls600 can just run itself on petrol and ignore the hybrid part of its activity if the batteries go kaput ?

Would this likely be possible does anybody know ?

or have a view please

Thanks

That's a scary story. Reminds me of the time when I had a problem with steering rack sensor on my LS460 and got quoted £10k by Lexus for the repair as required the entire steering rack to be replaced....but as Tulpen said these are high end cars and often not much goes wrong but when it does can be painful

Thank you John, a very very interesting and often quite alarming read

So the Battery pack is a separate item from the Inverter which is a separate issue from the failing Carbon ? $7000 switch ( presumably from petrol to Battery mode )

Clearly any Ls600 I would buy would be long long out of Lexus warranty ( which doesn't seem to cover much of this anyway ,,,,,,,,,,,,  at least in the USA)

A fearsome read and many owners in the USA just effectively dumping their Ls600 cars coz of the hybrid issues emerging with those extraordinary costs

It's a fair warning and one I shall heed, hybrid is good for the planet but maybe not so good for one's pockets

It really is little wonder that the then late 1980's to late 90's flagship Ls400 is beginning to be eagerly sought after in some circles

mine at 235k miles and only 24 years young in 6 days time looks to be the way to STAY :yahoo:

well, until maybe I understand a little more about the Ls430 and Ls460 and some of the 'orrible bills that owners sometimes face with new technology failures

Thank you so much guys for your guidance to the Ls600 USA forum comments. I would never have thought to get that sort of detailed complex history on my own endeavours

It certainly doesn't seem too have been available anywhere in the UK ( that I have discovered whatever )

And remember that Lexus now warrants its Hybrid Batteries for 15 years from date of manufacture and still offers Annual Hybrid Battery checks.

Did not notice any of that in U.S. Forum.

A good used 2010 LS600H (post upgrade with RSR and 3 rear seats) for about 15k with 6 years warranty on hybrid components would, in my opinion, represent great value

This is rather interesting too.

warranty on hybrid components

if this warranty just simply covers the batteries then reading the USA posts there are some serious other issues surrounding the hybrid set-up that can fail too

The Inverter at $24,000 and whatever this Carbon Switch might be at $7,000

all a bit scary to be sure

and for me to " invest " in a much later car and to take out comprehensive Lexus insurance ( is it really that comprehensive ) seems a bit of a financial nonsense to me quite frankly

I enjoy my Ls400, and my previous two too at their time.

I also have my quite superb 56 plate AWD Honda Legend that I have trouble driving, the seating, steering rake and all else totally fails to allow my legs to be comfortable after 10 mins driving BUT it really is the gf's car so that's all ok :whistling:

Never been a petrolhead nor impressed with status symbols nor 'wanting to have ' the latest or very best of anything tbh, just enjoying good simple quite comfy safe reliable easy driving with plenty of oomph to get me out of any challenging situations ..........  oh, and to sometimes race the s..t out of boy racers at the lights :yahoo:

I'll take my time to change cars, there's never any rush and there's ALWAYS an opportunity to buy another at some time down the line ......  the world's not short on V8s or V12's for sure

My next door neighbour has just changed his 2004 Bentley at 78k miles for a 10 plate at 25k miles, doing his usual few hundred miles a year in it and parking it outside ........  now is that a status complex or what !  :no2:

His other main car is his Audi S8 ( is it, it's big bugger ) ...................... and his old but beautiful looking Jensen Interceptor might be the alternative car for me BUT I guess that's potentially full of bills if I was to do my usual 12 / 15k miles a year

Now a brand new Ls400 to commemorate the 30th anniversary would be a good car for Lexus to produce provided it retained much of it's Old School technology

I'd seriously consider buying one of those or sure

19 years in the saddle of a Ls400,  so maybe my psyche and ' will ' isn't in bothering to cope with potential car nightmares

Thanks for all your help in getting me to this point

TPMS worries are exaggerated - I have multiple wheels for one car (summers & winters) and bought some of the generic Autel MX-sensors at less than £25 a corner and then program them accordingly with the Autel MaxiTPMS Pad.

For the LS460 you just need to know the sensor IDs that the Autel program generates and then program them into the car via Techstream or similar and you're good. I used a Carista Bluetooth dongle and my phone last time on the LS460 to program a new sensor in.
