I recall that What Car magazine did a survey of these fees a few months ago. They were typically described as covering overheads such as HPI searches, free driveaway insurance, new number plates, a half tank of fuel, etc.  

I think it’s mean and stingy too on a premium product.  But we are also LED to believe that dealers make next to nothing on actual vehicles and hence their obsession with GAP Insurance, Supershine treatments, and so on.

I don’t really have a huge problem with the need to charge it, but I do think it’s very poor to have it as an additional cost. It really should be part of the overall price.
