SORNing my car.

With regret I have decided to SORN my car even though I have only just got it back on the road at the beginning of March. Because of the Corona Virus I am not likely to need to use it, and it seems pointless keeping it taxed at around £30 a month, and not use it. My wife has an Aygo that only costs £20 a year to tax so for local outings if needed we can use that,
It is most unlikely that the restrictions will be lifted in the next 3 months. If I do wish to use the car I can tax it on line at any time.

In the mean time as the car is close to 150,000 miles I have ordered parts to give it a head to toe service including changing the coolant pump, drive belt, timing chain, plugs, all fluids, filters and gearbox oil pump bearings. I can take my time doing this, and it will give me something else to do outside on pleasant days other than gardening.
I am going to flush the engine oil, and refill with 0w16  Toyota synthetic oil
I have over an acre of garden consisting mostly of an old orchard, and grass for witch I use a sit on mower to cut. I use the old oil out of my engine in my Briggs, and Stratton mower engine, and in my 2stroke chain saw for both the engine, and chain lubricant.

I will also service the Aygo leaving out the timming chain change as this although 14 years old has only done 75,000 miles.

I'll be putting my GS on SORN too until it is needed again. As you say, pointless paying insurance and tax while it sits still collecting dust.

I noticed that if the car is parked up without locking it using the remote (or button on the door), the 12V Battery charge lasts much longer. Observed this the last time it was on SORN for a year.

Ganesh, you would be unwise not to continue with insurance for the car.

Yes, even if was parked on the moon!

What if;

it won`t start, 

it is stolen

if it catches fire or is damaged in any other way

No insurance cover leads to you being responsible for costs which otherwise would be picked up by the insurance company.

Your money, your risk and your choice Ganesh.

I'd imagine ( and maybe that's all it is too ) that the insurers would quote you a very sensible price if the car doesn't travel on the road during some sort of specialist and inexpensive  " lay-up "  type of insurance

I doubt you'd be the only car owner looking to SORN and wanting some sort of cover, just in case

Good call John, this seems like an ideal time to catch-up on pending jobs.

We have started ripping our garden apart for a fairly substantial overhaul, I ordered building supplies yesterday but I doubt they'll be delivered now.  i still have plenty of prep work to crack on with tho.  Swinging a pick axle has loosened up my back no end, hopefully it doesn't break me tho 😆

If I get time I intend to under seal GS and the wife's V-dub, both are 12 years old and looking crusty underneath at the moment.  Thankfully I have most of the supplies for this.

Keep us posted on your progress and 🤞 you can get your parts.

Update: our building supplies are still being delivered, a few days earlier than expected too.  So I guess the building trade are still operating...

missed out really, wisdom has it I believe that apple tree pruning takes place in January to stop the poor buggers bleeding ( to death ) if pruned later in the year

roses are good to prune now but take care re the frost though
