You MUST put your AC system into Recirc mode before trying to remove the filter, whatever you do DoNot try to force the thing open to get to the filter as you will cause £££££'s worth of damage to the plastic flap mechanism within the filter housing see here.

If you following the above instructions and it is still not opening then alas it looks like someone has tried before you and sadly may have broken it already!
