Probably directional - left one comes on when turning left, right one when turning right. I think the car has to be above a certain speed for this to happen.

It's the other way around actually. Cornering lights only work up to around 20 or 30 mph.

If you look at these lights closely, you will notice that there are two lights built into the housing. Cornering lights on the outside, fog lights on the inside.

That must be covered within the Handbook, surely ?

If they were both in at the same, this would suggest that your fog lights were on.

Cornering lights come on either on the right or the left. If your steering wheel is slightly off centre, this will be sufficient to activate them

Years back when I picked up my 65plate NX, my misses needed the ladies before we set off home, I was in the car ready and itching to go.
She spotted one of the fog lights wasn't working, so she went back into the showroom, an engineer said because the steering wheel was slightly turned that sides light will come on as they're directional. This function can be disabled, but once you've used your lost without it.
Hope this helps

hello. went outside once it was dark and yes they are directional lights and were not both on at the same time so i must have had the fog lights on which is a mystery as i am normally pretty aware of what switches i have put on.  anyhow all good now. thanks input from each/all of you.
