Rear Window Light

the rear window brake light

i remember reading that it cant just be disconnected and that it needs to be shorted out

so that no warning lights show

anyone any ideas??

secondly how do you get at it, had a quick look in the boot and cant see anything

does this mean the seat etc has to come out ?

yea the back seat has to come out takes about 10 mins to get the back seat out to get to the light :winky:

You will need to put in a resistor to stop the fault light coming on the dash.

Connect the rear window break light to a measuring instrument and measure the electrical resited. (I like my english )

yea the back seat has to come out

:o ...you sure about that...I just removed the housing on the rear parcel shelf and disconnected the bulb! As Pete says, if you want to stop the warning light coming on you have to add a resistor to complete the circuit.

This is the second such request to remove the rear shelf via the rear seats and C pillar covers.

I wonder if some kind person could do a little photo shoot step by step ?

Don't have to remove seat or shelf. Light housing lifts out.

If all else fails, refer to owners manual conveniently provided with the car

As to why remove it... maybe fitted a spoiler with integrated light ?

Off topic i know, but when i had the spoiler fitted to my IS, it came with an integrated brake light (see avatar for the spoiler), and i asked the guy to not disconnect the existing 3rd brake light as it would undoubtedly put the dash warning light on. So i went to Lexus Norwich about it, and they said that I would have to have a specific circuit kit put in to stop the light coming on in the dash display. Sounds to me like they were having a bit of a laugh, or just taking the p**s trying to get more money out of me.

Any views?

yep a little plastic block with a resistor in it - out of curiosity i disabled the rear light and the warning light came on - i measured the resistance of the 3rd light , got a resistor the same, shorted the plug with it and the warning light went out.

ok managed to get the cover off (well done tony)

measured the resistance of the lamp

get reading of 1 ohm ( 16w lamp 12v ohms law = 0.9 so about right i think)

so place 1 ohm resistor in place of lamp

dash warning light comes on

test resistor

blown!

any ideas

could i use a higher ohm resistor

one i had was very big - high amperage type, only tried it once then but the light back in, and no i dont still have it.

I just decided to keep both brake lights operational, couldn't be bothered to sort it out! Looks ok tho!

You are replacing a 16W bulb with a similar value resistor - therefore you will need a 16W (at least) resistor :winky: Make sure it doesn't touch anything plastic / liable to catch fire!

If you have access to some resistors, I would try some higher values to reduce the power - depends how much current the sensor needs to see to be happy.

Power = V^2/R (V=voltage ~13.8, R=resistor value)

maybe i can live with the light
