First and foremost i would like to wish all our LOC members a very happy and prosperous New Year

I am running Dunlops on my mk4 450h and they are about half worn but are now starting to sound a bit noisy maybe its the cold weather but was thinking would it be possible to change size to 245 45 18 instead of the 235 45 18 that i have on as it is a slightly higher tyre wall i could get a good deal on this larger size i just wondered if any member had tried it and would it invalidate the insurance

Cheers all

Robert

I would email your insurance and get a reply from them and keep the reply as a record.

I have Dunlop SP Sport Maxx RT2 (245/45/18) on my 430 - they are roughly half warn - grip is excellent but the front ones drag badly when turning in the cold weather - it is such a nuisance - I cannot take a left/right turn without them dragging and making terrible knocking noise - I would not expect this from a premium tyre.

your speedo will under read by 1.3% using the 245/45/18

this tyre size diameter is the closest to your original size diameter

this is the calculater i used https://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Recently changed all my tyres from Rainsports 245/40/18 to Pirelli P Zero 245/45/18 100Y and they are so noisy!

I only noticed when I had the window open and  the tyre noise was heard, no more creeping up behind people in the supermarket car park now, they’ll turn around expecting a JCB behind them.

I stand to be corrected but I think that provided you are not over 2% out from standard you you are OK legally.  Speedos on all my cars have read fast.  On my DRX450h at 30mph true, it shows about 32mph which increases very slightly with higher speeds.  So I wouldn't be concerned about speedo reading being too far out.  (There will be minute differences as tyres wear anyway or even depending on tyre pressures).

It's certainly worth telling your insurers who may or may not make a small adjusting charge.

The Dunlops that came with my car were pretty poor in a number of ways and I replaced them with Cross Climates which were so much better even though the Dunlops were less than half worn. Unfortunately, the Cross Climates are not available in all sizes but there are still better tyres out there than the Dunlops.
