P2757 - Torque Converter Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid

Hi guys,

Just bought a 2007 IS250 automatic with 100k miles on it. Unfortunately on my drive back the engine light came on and a check VSC message. After checking with a Snap-on diagnostic tool the P2757 code came up.

I've spoke to two gearbox specialists and they both suggested that I get a new gearbox and have it fitted. Now I also know two mechanics and they both suggested I change the oil in the gearbox and that it might fix the issue.

Was wondering what everyone's opinions on this are as I don't want to spend 2-3 thousand on a car I just bought so I might just give it back and get my money. But preferably I'd keep the car as I've kinda fallen in love with it. Anyone know if a gearbox service is likely to fix the issue?

There is a good chance to cure the fault by changing the transmission oil and filter. Use only original parts in this case. The solenoid may be stuck or it may be a performance issue. It may also be something else causing this fault.

If you can get your money back, I would go for it and look for another car or model.

Chris.

Right, I might give it a go because honestly the gearbox feels completely fine there's no stutters, no gears are having issues with going in or leaving and the changes are still absolutely unnoticeable which is what makes the warning light more annoying.

If you bought the car from a dealer you have statutory consumer rights including returning the car for a full refund and getting them to repair the car at their cost unless of course the price you paid reflected the  faults that were disclosed at the time of purchase.

If you are still planning on keeping the car I would at least be looking at some financial input from the dealer to get the repairs carried out.

Transmission fluid flush and filter could help but even just that with 20 litres of the correct Toyota fluid and filter will set you back around £300.00. The solenoid itself is listed at around £170.00 plus labour of course.

Right that's good to know, I bought the car from London and I'm in Leeds plus being a 22 year old driver the deposit for insurance was 330 quid alone so if I return the car I'll be out about 500 quid which I don't really want to be. I bought a 100k mile 2007 SE for £4000 but it seems to have none SE features such as cooled seats (correct me if I'm wrong I thought it was a SE-L feature only) and has all the other stuff such as M&L speakers and sat nav with reverse camera so feels like a small bargain?

There been a shed load of posts and threads about all the gearbox issues you can think of here. One of the outstanding points was error messages being sorted by a gearbox oil change. Be aware though not all the oil comes out when you drain it. The gearbox holds about 8 litres but only 2-2.5 litres comes out. Sometimes just the one drain/refill works or doing it again. If you get one of your mechanics to do the job then make sure they do the job right. There are a number of good videos on YouTube how to do it. Yeah I don't blame you wanting to keep the car coz you can't help loving them. Out of interest does your car have an automatic rear window blind?

Anyway welcome to Lexus ownership and the best Lexus forum there is. Like I've said there's tons of stuff about gearbox issues But there very very few.

I have watched a video by a woman called Faye I believe on how to do the oil change and saw that people recommended to do it 4 times.

And no I don't have the rear window blind I believe that's another SE-L feature? Just like I thought the cooled seats were which to be honest now that I've used them they're OK. But the rest of the car is awesome, always wanted a Lexus since a child plus combine the fact that I've come from a Fiat Punto it's hard to not enjoy it. 😂

Changing the gearbox oil is a must when buying a car with some miles behind it.

Like Mr. Vlad said, only 2-2.5 litres will come out from the drain plug, however, if you remove the filter and gasket, roughly 5-5.5 litres will drain out.

I would suggest replacing the gasket and filter, along with the amount of oil that was drained, then drive for some time, replace 2-2.5 litres from the drain plug and repeat one or two more times. This will ensure that mist of the fluid has been refreshed.

You should also ask for a photo of the trans oil and compare the colour with the brand new one to determine if the one in the gearbox is heavily contaminated or not.

This is the oil that you should use:

You'll be out a lot more than that if the transmission fails. Solenoids are external to the unit itself and issues with them are typically electrical and not crazy expensive to rectify, however in this case the code indicated can also be caused by dirty fluid or a bad torque converter clutch.

I would suggest either:

1) Reject the car and get a refund for your insurance. Insurance companies are obligated to provide a full refund within the first 14 days.

2) Take it to a trusted Lexus specialist and have them diagnose the issue for you. If the torque converter is about to fail, refer to 1)

You /could/ also take it back the dealer that sold it to you, but they will just be looking to make you go away for as little money as possible. Changing the fluid may buy you some time, so they'll likely just do that and hope you go away. After the initial cooling off period you have far fewer rights and getting your money back will be a lot harder.

Thank you sir, I've decided I will do exactly this and just replace the solenoid while doing the filter and oil change just to really make sure the problem goes away.

Daniel, Have you reset the fault? If so has it re-appeared? A while back (years ago) in my first IS250 i had that error and done a bit of digging around on forums and found that it could also be a bit of condensation in the solenoid. I reset the code and it never came back on again.

Have you driven through rain, snow or has the car been through hot/cold scenario? Did it sit on the forecourt for a while not being used?

If you have reset it and it has not come back on if it was me i would wait to see how it performs now its in use before spending that sort of money on it. Torque converters rarely fail, look through the forum and you probably wont find any owner that's experienced a failure. I would suspect the solenoid?

I've put a thousand miles on the car now, the problem still persists after wiping the code 3 times now although the last time it took a lot longer for the engine light to pop back up. I've also noticed the car drives absolutely fine while it's off but as soon as it comes back up the car when it's gearing up from a long pull foot fully down gets really jerky/twitchy changes which again doesn't happen until the code comes back on.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hey guys sorry for reviving an old friend but you've all been so helpful I thought it's better to ask here than start a new thread.

I'm finally getting around to doing the gearbox service, I'm looking around to buy the filter for the gearbox and the gasket but I've noticed there are a few different options at different price points for "Lexus IS250" parts.

Can someone explain and advise me on which kit to buy and maybe even suggest other websites to check?
