I have a replica of a period tax disc that would have been displayed on my LS 400 when it was first registered in January 1997. It caught my eye again today and I was interested to know the % increase in VED for first registrations between then and now. Assuming a n/a V8 would be in the highest band.

IMG_20210520_124125924.thumb.jpg.ae2ce1323b3346653171cddcbd511ca2.jpg

VED for first registration 1997 £145

VED for first registration 2021 £2245

An increase of 1448%

Another assumption would be that a "new" LS 400 now would be priced at over £40k and subject to the additional £335 rate on top of the £155 from the second year on. So how about VED cost over the first 3 years ownership from 1997 (ignoring small increases year on year) and 2021?

VED cost for 3 years 1997 on £435

VED cost for 3 years 2021 on £3225

An increase of 641%

Not really going anywhere with this, just thought it was interesting. And eyeopening.

The assumption seems to be that if you can afford a luxury car, you can pay a luxury tax (to drive on roads that have not seen the VED spent on them).

The very reason why I went for a 400 Mk4 as the VED is okay to live with.  At the time I could have got bought a 430 or 460, but it was VED that was part of the equation.

Having worked around most of Europe I have never found anyone who is happy with either the yearly fee or the new registration fee, but it does seem most other countries spent these taxes making the roads look like roads not tank training grounds.

Trucks do not pay anywhere near enough for the damage they do and though truck owners may complain, the damage to weight ratio is exponential.  Though reasonably sure my 2tonne LS is not doing that much more damage than my wife's lightweight Mazda 2!!

I never realised until mentioned by another member that my imported Toyota Celsior costs £280.00 a year while the equivalent  year Lexus LS430 is £340.00 a year when apart from the badges they are the same car.

the " new " Ls400 is really the Ls460 if you needed to equate it to anything known today on new costing !

And I think I'm correct in saying that as an import it stays at around £280 regardless of year when an awful lot of similar fruity stuff jump to £550+ post March '06.

Yes also true, JDM imports do not show the CO emissions on the V5c, this is good regarding VED but not so good if you happen to be in a ULEZ and the car is “Not Recognised, that will be £17.50 please”

Current VED for LS430 first registered before 1st March 2001 = £280 (pre-emissions)
Current VED for LS430 first registered between 1st March 2001 and 22 March 2006 (inclusive)= £340 (Band K)
Current VED for LS430 first registered on 23 March 2006 or later = £600 (Band M)

But then again, who wants to be sat in cramped, noisy, tinny, gutless tin can? 🤣

I've never understood the system.  My neighbour has an 11 reg diesel Ford Focus and the tax is £20, how does that work, unless he's telling porkies.

You can be happy you are not from Denmark. The way they tax people there is worse than pirates or the mob could ever imagine.

Was there a time when the government believed that oil burners were the saviours of the planet, so tax was very low.

I do recall Ford back in the mid 80's saying lean burn petrol would be better than diesel, but one can assume that the experts were ignored (maybe Michael Gove was punting his beliefs that experts are dumb even back then???)

Actually Malc the best ever are from Sainsbury, they cost £1.50 RIGA Gold. from Latvia. Stuff from tesco etc. come from morocco and in water, tomato sauce or sunflower oil so a different product actually albeit genetically similar if that makes sense?

Absolutely .  I prefer the tomato sauce stuff, there's always enough left over from a single tin for the cat to have a treat ....  might be wasted on the cats if it were £1.50 a tin Gold product

Malc

Anyway, back to Road Tax stuff

My Ls400 is £285 ? or so

The Honda Legend being a 56 plate is a staggeringly stupid just shy of £600

My mini Schnauzer loves them but prefers smoked salmon 😅, regarding tax my XKR has a 4.0 litre engine and average 19 mpg yet my VED is 260 I think 🤔 way way more than my RX450H. And I for one am not complaining, well not loudly that is.

If that Ford Focus was the 1.6TDCI with the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) fitted, then the current VED is £30, so very likely was £20.
All these rates were set based on fuel economy before the government realised what a nasty polluter diesel is.

As for tinned fish, I am partial to tinned pink salmon and Princes Pilchards in Tomato Sauce,... and they don't mind being "sat in cramped, noisy, tinny, gutless tin can" because they are dead, but then that could also apply to the brain state of many of todays motorists. 🙄

The "luxury" car tax is a total ripoff. Firstly, many £40k + cars are pretty mundane and secondly the threshold hasn't moved , despite car prices regularly rising. Ironically, you need a luxury car now to survive our roads without regular access to a back specialist.
