Insurance for new driver

Recommended Posts

Ok, here is the story,

My son (age 18) has just passed his test (hurray!). He wants to drive his brothers car but his brothers car insurance company will not insure anyone under the age of 21. So he can’t use that company (esure)

Can you have the same car insured by two different people on different policies? The internet seems to suggest it is legal but my wife’s insurance company say it must be the same company. Their would be confusion if the car was stolen, which policy would you claim on?

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

Paul

How can you have 2 Registered Keepers of the same car Paul ?

Apparently it is legal but you need to disclose you are not the owner or registered keeper of the car. That and a new 18 year old driver will probably push the premium further through the roof though.

It's perfectly legal in the UK for two people to insure the same vehicle using two different insurance companies. What is definitely illegal is for you to claim the full amount of any claim from both of the companies, that's fraud.

Whether a second insurer would agree to you insuring a vehicle that you don't own is of course another matter.

Either way, and understanding the OP, why would you? One hell of an expensive way of getting your younger son insured on his older brother's car.  Tell him to wait until his brother's insurance comes up for renewal and he can share the cost with another underwriter who will allow an U21 driver.

You cannot, but you don't have to be the registered keeper to insure a vehicle (although it does limit your options as some companies will only insure the registered keeper).
