Indeed - had it been a later model - that button would be the passenger injector seat...🙂

Shift lock override, pressing the button allows the gear selector to move without the key in the ignition and pressing the brake pedal, useful for recovery or when in a garage and car needs moving by pushing it.

Or even.......ejector seat!

And the button is to prevent 'premature ejections'.  😄
