CT200H horn not working! Help!

Need some urgent help guys!!! The horn in my CT200H has stopped working intermittently. It only works when I press the horn whilst the steering wheel is slightly turned in either the 2 o'clock or 10 o'clock position but doesn't seem to work if my steering wheel is dead straight. No warning lights on the dashboard. Only noticed this today and it worked fine straight after I retrofitted my cruise control switch on my steering wheel a month ago.

is this problem urgent as stated in the post as this is the 2nd post for the same issue

by the originator the 1st being the 8th of May 2021 and yet no suggestions seem to of been tried

Trouble is mate, I don't know the best place to source this clockspring and I'm hearing that the actual part costs almost £800 from a Lexus dealership. I've got an upcoming MOT which I know will fail because of this horn issue.

If I had known that this was a common problem with this model of car, I would've never purchased it 😒

I really don't fancy paying £800 for a clockspring and whatever else on top for labour. £200 to £300 for parts and labour is fair enough but £800 is far too dear for a intermittent horn problem that is driving me up the wall

Thank you so much for that mate, I spoke to an advisor there and he's convinced its more than likely that it's a problem with the connections for the horn which only make contact  and sound the horn whenever I move the steering wheel about

i dont think you know what a clock spring cable is mate,

the easiest way to describe to you is that cable is a

coiled ribbon cable with a number of tracks on it

the tracks provide connections for the airbag,horn,cc and all steering wheel functions,

when you turn the steering wheel 1 way the ribbon cable will

tighten and become smaller in diameter turn the wheel in the

opposite direction the cable will become looser and larger

in diameter so every time you make a movement of the

steering wheel this cable is contracting and expanding and over a period

of time can fracture and fail, if your can has been used as a town car

the steering wheel will of course had more use in comparison to

a car being used on the motorway .

overall i feel you have done well with this cable, your car has had

10 years of use and the clock spring cable will only be 0.5mm in thickness

so its quiet fragile even when new.

Genuine ones are expensive but there are cheap copies available.

i must admit it's hard for me to recall the last time I ever had a need to use my car horn. Certainly not on the Lexus in the last 4 years of ownership, of course I presume they are all working ok as evident by the MOT certs. 😉

Me too i,ve rarely had an occasion to use it but i did check today after reading the post and it,s ok.

The item in the eBay link would be the part needed and well worth buying to save a big expense from Lexus.

I'm happy to report that the horn issue has now been resolved and it turns out it was a dodgy clockspring all along, had a aftermarket clockspring installed and the horn and other functions work like a dream.

I have recently discovered the same issue with my 2012 ct200h. At about 2 o’clock or 10 o’clock the horn works but at straight position it doesn’t. 

Would you care to let me know how much it cost you and who can sort it out?

I do apologise for the late reply, I have managed to get this fixed at a reasonable price at a local Vehicle Electrician specialist in Central London.

I had to purchase a non-OEM part to resolve the issue. But since its installation there has been no issues, all steering wheel functions have returned to normal and the horn works perfectly! 

I have included a link to the part that I purchased on eBay which cost me around £40 at the time (£800 for an OEM part), and I was charged £60 for the installation by my Vehicle Electrician. Have had it installed for over a year without any issues.

mine went on my sc430 just after purchase, the after market one lasted about a month. I ended up going oem (ouch). Hope you have better luck.
