Brake disc and pads replacement RX450H - 2014

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

i am about to replace the discs/pads on my 2014 RX450H. Does anyone have the recommended torque values for the brake assembly pins (the main brake housing), the brake calliper assembly bolts and the wheel nuts?

Thank you guys!

Graham.

Just had major service and MOT and told pads need replacing, fair enough but suggested replace disks as well which to me don't look too bad.  Expensive exercise to add to service at Lexus so will remove and check sufficient metal left to skim, if not I guess it's a quote from Lexus Parts Direct.

Looks like you opted for the brembo option ECP offer then Peter. I see they are also offering Pagid discs at £10 more.  I know Pagid are used as OE on some cars and I have used their pads on cars in the past.  However, there have been assertions made that the Pagid ones ECP sell are an inferior in house version produced by Pagid for them.  So how well their brake parts compare with what Lexus use is a matter of conjecture.  The only certain way to get the best proven type is to go to Lexus.  There was a time when getting the disks skimmed on the car if they were still comfortably within minimum spec was a reasonable interim approach.  But I have found the difference between doing this now and replacing with genuine ones is so small it means the latter is the more sensible option.

PS.  It has also been contended that truing discs by turning tends to prematurely wear pads due to the spiraling effect of the process.  It is preferable for them to be ground finished (as happens with cylinder bores).

£430 for my front discs and pads from Lexus Parts Direct! Discs I have now were already skimmed as they had plenty material at that time, now I need to go for a new set, if I decide to change them. The car is still not being used full time so little vibration (occasionally) doesn't bother me.

Can't believe how much cheaper discs and pads for GS300h, more than half a price, I think you can get them for like £160-170!

£430 seems alot for front pads and discs.

Main dealer charges £325 for pads, discs, labour, rears  are £295.

Quite a few independents were unable to source rear discs, looking on ecp they are currently unavailable.

My local garage charged me £528 all in pads/discs/labour/vat front & rear

Hi Robert, yes, for my model (GS450h Premium) the front discs are pretty expensive and the problem is they are not the best quality, in my opinion, even if they are a Lexus supplied.

I couldn't find in UK any aftermarket discs and pads, I guess in USA there would be someone selling aftermarket parts.

This is from Lexus online shop:

And the Lexus Glasgow dealer wants even more money for it, I do not remember exactly but something around £600-650 for the same set. When I asked them if they can match the price to online shop they refused to match it or even drop a few pounds off.

Rear discs I had no issues finding, I had then from Dingbro for about £130-£140 which is still cheaper than Lexus online shop.

This may be of academic interest if you just buy discs and pads direct from Lexus but I thought I would look into this a little further in view of some aspersions that some of the after market products were fake or of inferior quality, sometimes being produced as a lower quality version by a well know name especially for a major retailer.  I chanced on what was to me, an interesting thread on a Mercedes Benz forum wherein a specialist in the industry gave his opinion on the way this had changed and how take overs and consolidations and rebranding meant some of the well known names could not be so well relied on.  I read all seven pages as it is rare to get information from somebody within the industry (purportedly and most probably the case). I must say much of what was said was news to me, even the recommendation not to use copper ease, something I have used for decades.  Anyway, here is the thread and the user name now is 'Deleted member 159235'  (seems he upset an existing member).  He first posts on 16th Dec 2020,

Doesn't seem to have worked I will see if I can input the link manually. https:forums.mbclub.co.uk/threads/eurobrake-brake-pads.235389/

The pads & discs for the GS450h are also £325 all in pads/discs labour. When you speak of not good quality, do you mean braking performance, or feel through the pedal?

Robert, I think the discs are not exactly well designed for heavy car as GS, at the start they perform well but after some time, after couple of heavy braking they might become warped, I know that an older Toyota Camry has similar issues.

I will check your link again, thank you.

Yep, it says £325! I will give them a call, something tells me that this price is for smaller discs (Luxury model) but I will find out.

I contacted Lexus online and they confirmed they do have these prices for front discs and pads +labour, but they advised to check with the dealer first if they support this offer.

Just parts (discs and pads) still cost just under £430! Doesn't make sense!
