Depending on load and how much you press the gas pedal.

When going up from our garage engine is revving, but as soon as on level ground it goes back to normal quiet beautiful sounding noiseless.

Going uphill in mountains it makes as much noise as all gasoline cars if I only press the pedal a little. If I floor the pedal, it does not sound sweet at all.

In a word, Yes It is normal. I can't explain it to you myself, but if you look at the numerous postings on the various forums on this site you will find the answer to your question.
