Auto gears on screen is 250

Yesterday I went on to the dual carriage way. My auto box stayed in 4 then went to 5th gear I was going 70mph and it was stuck and wouldn’t shift to 6th:

The gears weren’t dropping up or down correctly on the dash.

today I played with paddle shift,  all gears all over the place. One said 3 on the dash l, paddle  shift 5 all over the place ???? Even on park when ready to pull away

also gearbox feels like it’s slipping.
Also can smell a burning smell from under bonnet and gear box slips

Any help ?????

First pic tells me you're in manual mode. The gear lever over to the right.

2nd pic tells me you're in full auto.

3rd pic again tells me you're in manual mode.

You say you've used paddle shift. I take it the paddles on the steering wheel.

What I've noticed in mine when I move the gear stick to the right, manual mode, the gear position indicator stays showing 1 also  the middle gear position shows a pre set 4. When I set off the 4 changes to 1 and when I shift to 2nd the display shows 2 whilst the top displays 1. Change to 3rd and the display shows 3 and still the top display shows 1.

It can be confusing when you go into manual mode.

In S mode the gear you select is the highest gear the transmission will go into, it isn't a full manual mode. So for example if you have 4, then it will go through gears 1 to 4 but no further.

However in normal mode if your vehicle isn't shifting correctly and you can smell burning then you need to avoid using the vehicle and check your transmission fluid level and condition ASAP.

Well said Colin. I should have said S mode not manual mode.

I just recently had auto transmission oil replaced by a Lexus main dealer.

When I put in sport in standstill position it goes straight to 4th gear?

also automatic gears aren’t changing up and down as they should ??

When you move gearstick from D to S, it limits the range to 4 gears automatically as Colin explained. So if you were driving in 2nd and moved the stick to S, it will show 4th, but you would still be driving in second, but if you continue accelerating eventually it will changed-up to 4th. However, if you were in 6th, then it would downshift to 4th (say if you want overtaking that is great).

Gear position on the screen shows the gear you are actually in, the screen with just a number shows S limit. As per your first picture, you are in first gear, but you have limited range to 4. Then you are in 1st gear on D, and then you are in the 1st gear, just now not limited on S mode (selected 6th).

Ok that makes sense .
never taken noticed before

so it’s all normal ?????

no problem, just curious why it won’t change to 6th gear even over 70mph

also another problem ?

back end keeps swinging out around bends corners ????

Until this weekend we have had abnormally dry weather for weeks with the roads getting a build up of dirt, diesel film, road salt etc which has made them very slippery, combined with temperatures below 8 dec c where summer tyres give up their grip, we now have situations where tyres are losing traction. I've seen people complain about this across different car forums recently. Obviously check your tyre tread and pressures but I'd see if it improves after you have had heavy rain in your area.

You need to be taking it back to get it inspected in case the wrong fluid was used, incorrect level set or there is a leak.

RWD car in wet maybe 😄

It won't change to 6th at 70MPH if you limited it to 4th... maybe you have accidentally switched PWR mode?

Nope no pwr mode on and don’t know how to even limit ??

Maybe your right with the build up of dirt film diesel on the road. Tyres ar w perfect Michelin and all tyre pressures perfect.

I will give them a call and also see if there are  any leaks.

Michelin PS4 (if they are PS4) drops out very noticeable blow ~7C and feels almost like you need to warm them-up.

I have Michelin pilot sport 4 rear  and primacy 4 front

I did a thread a while ago about a journey I did from Rochdale to Leeds. I deliberately had it in S mode just to compare fuel consumption to standard auto box. I stayed at 70 on the motorway but on the 621 I floored it fir fun. Red lined it all the time being in 4th gear. My car returned I think mid 20's mpg which I thought was outstanding. How fast did I go? Find the thread lol

how do I get a slipping gearbox diagnosed and tested ???

I don't know John. I'd phone a number of auto box specialists the more the better to gauge their advice.

yeah, you want an auto transmission specialist as not all garages have the knowledge to properly work on them. But if Lexus has recently touched it then you really should be complaining to them and asking them to fix it.

I am not a great fan of mixing tyre types on different axles.  Visually there are some subtle differences between the two tread patterns and there will also be differences between the compound mixes.

The result may well be variations in handling - especially when cornering in damp/wet conditions on slightly compromised road surface conditions.  Of course another factor will be the relative tread wear on each tyre.

This comparison between the two Michelins might be interesting as it claims slight variations in wet road braking and when aquaplaning!

If I remember correctly, the general principle is to put the best tyres on the rear driven wheels - but I stand ready to be corrected!

Torque converter AT doesn't "slip", but I know what you mean - it is feeling similar to that when clutch is slipping on MT. On AT that is usually because gear fails to engage and transmission throws it in neutral or back to previous gear for short time, in mean time engine just revs delivering no power to the wheels. Common cause would be wrong level of ATF (although I would expect Lexus to know better), the next cause would be solenoid issues - but in both cases I would expect VSC light when this happens.

Same here - I always found it annoying and fascinating that in UK people don't pay much attention. In other countries it is literally illegal to have different tyres on the same axle (in UK they just have to be same size). When it comes to different axles - I would say tyres should be at very least "comparable" - that is if you have UHP tyre on the rear, it would be best to have UHP tyre on the front, so they act more predictably.

Both OP tyres are good tyres themselves, but Primacy is "eco" tyre designed to low rolling resistance in mind, PS4 is UHP tyre which is quite aggressive - meaning amazing grip when pushing it to the limits, but I have personally experienced it being kind of dicey when cold. If you got out in the morning and outside is 2 degrees and slightly damp, then it could be quite unpredictable for some time. My drive to was ~45mins (18 mines) and it would take probably 30 minutes (say 12 miles) for tyre to start "feeling right". In short - you kind of need to treat PS4 as semi-slick, it almost needs "warming-up".

Overall, I agree with you that these tyres are not the best match - in warm and dry PS4 will be a lot more grippy than Primacy and this could induce understeer and in cold and damp it probably will be other way around. So the car behaviour would be very hard to predict when conditions changes.

if the engine/gearbox is cold the car will hold 5th for a while. when it gets all warmed up it will shift to 6th. also noticed that when cold the gearbox holds gears for longer and at higher revs than when at operating temp - probably to bring it up to temp quicker?
