Exhaust

Hi guys,

My SC430 was in at Lexus Leeds yesterday and the only thing in the advise section was the exhaust especially rear.

Wanting to upgrade from the standard Lexus spec I visited two specialist fabricators of performance Exhausts.

These were Tony Banks Performance Exhausts and Keltec Performance Exhausts both in Leeds.

They both appeared to be very knowledgeable both saying they had done several SC430's before.

After discussions I decided to retain a 3rd cat but to improve the tone and increase the volume.

Their prices were very similar but in the end I decided to use Tony Banks. David Banks his son who I saw appeared more interested and put my car on a ramp to assess it properly. He also showed me numerous chrome tailpipes so I could decide exactly what I wanted.

So it will all be new right up to the front cats. It is booked in on 32rd May and I will report further when it has been fitted.

Hi Stewart

Yes he said he wanted it at 8 then he said he wanted there at 7!

How long did yours take and where did you go to kill the time?

Anthony

Once on the ramp 2 1/2  hrs roughly across the road is a small lake and a good walk around it I seem to remember a cafe but take a flask and sandwich, we sat outside because of covid and it was quite cold, not the best of experience but worth it in the end he offered me either 2inch piping or 3inch I left it up to him and apparently I have 2 inch pipes, he has a rack full of tailpipes I went with slashed ones, he also had some blue burned ones 😀 stew

What’s the cost of having one made and fitted?
I’d like a bit more of the V8 burble but unsure what parts you can discard from the original set up to pass MOT emissions 🤔🤔

I’ve just noted a slight blowing at the rear on start up lasting for a couple mins then quieten’s down.

The whole lot doesn’t look the best😟😟

Hi Stewart

Did you have a full system fitted and did you delete the 3rd cat? Is your new system the same box configuration as the original Lexus system?

Hi Neil

How much power difference is there with 3rd cat delete?

I was offered dual pipes at both sides and was considering the impact on cutting the rear bumper to accomodate it...I like the look but is it worth the extra work?

My appointment is a week on Monday so getting nearer and figure I need to give them the heads up about the cat and tailpipes before then.

Hi Ant, I'm going to say a third cat delete might give you 2 more bhp but it's a difficult question as very few people are prepared to put the SC430 on the dyno before and after fitting the exhaust. Any power increase is going to be realised from the improved scavenging effect of having an efficient merge section. The third cat delete may help a little in the flow, an X pipe, or the right Y merge section may give you a tiny bit more at the top end. It's a science......If we say 279 bhp is the base, maybe 285 is possible with a 3rd cat delete and improved merge pipe. The other benefit is that more of the exhaust is new.

With a 'sports' stainless steel exhaust and third cat delete most people say that it feels like it has a little more torque and I would agree that's how mine felt but the dyno suggested it might have gained just 2 bhp. The problem is the difficulty in measuring it, that's another approximate science, particularly with autos.

If you want more power from the exhaust it's probably a £3k exercise to fit headers and then you can join me at 307 bhp (according to the dyno. I think it's a little more now but I've not retested it) I did it just for the challenge and bragging rights not for the track. 🙂

As for the quad tails.....you know you want to 😎 just make sure they are confident of making a neat job of the rear bumper.

Well the long awaited day came!

On arrival at 7am I was called into the reception by Tony Banks who said he knew exactly what I wanted!

I said single rear chrome ends at each side and I was thinking of middle cat delete.

He asked why, and I said power increase to which he said no he wouldn't recommend it as emission laws are going to be tightened and when he has done it will be more responsive, much quicker and more MPG!

I was then sent off into Leeds to await their call to return. The call came at 1pm and I returned and paid the bill. I asked for the old Lexus tailpipe ends back incase they are needed.

It appears there is a fine balance between getting more noise but not increasing drone so I am happy with what I got. I am confident it is fabricated and fitted well so... happy days!

I will have a go at recording it tomorrow for you but if you let me know when you going to be enjoying a drive in the Peak District and I will meet you so could see and hear it!

Hi Russ

Yes it sounds good, I was a little unsure as to whether it was too quiet but on reflection it is spot on.

No 3rd cat delete, new one in price, it is definitely more responsive, havn't noticed more mpg but I live in hope!

If you are serious, have a visit to Holmfirth let me know and you can hear it live!!!

Sounds very nice. Not too loud but definitely a V8.🙂

Is the new cat back exhaust now; old Y pipe, new third sports cat, dual out to 2 new resonators and one large centre box? i.e. standard configuration but with new stainless steel custom parts?

Any difference in power will be a very small measure over stock but almost everyone with a new exhaust says it feels as if it has more torque.

Hi Stew

No, I was not trying to get more power but Tony was quite certain that one of his exhausts would deliver that....and he knows more about exhausts than I ever will!

I suppose any improvement is relative to the type and condition of the old one, it was after seeing the old one that was said and I firmly believe there has been a positive change.

Regards, Ant

The only way to measure it is by putting it on the rollers before and after. Despite what others say, I do believe keeping the large rear box is the best way to go.

Hi Neil

Yes, as we said earlier only the brave go there!! I felt happy to leave box decisions to him because I believed he would do right by my car and knew what was best and what I was trying to achieve.

I think he played it fairly safe which is the right thing to do. Too many have ruined a car with an excessively loud exhaust and the car is powerful enough to have plenty of fun.
