Rear subframe, an inevitable issue on rx400h?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

As I mentioned in a previous post, I am about to purchase a 2009 RX400h with 128000 on the clock, but I have been reading many posts about the rear subframe issue past a certain mileage.

I did have this problem on my Rx300 as well as heavily corroded rear brake plates which could have failed the MOT.

Is this an inevitable problem on these cars? How can you tell the condition of the subframe?

Many thanks for your input on this.

Look for the scale type of rust.

It may all look rusty but brown dusty is ok, it is when it starts to layer and especially if you can dislodge some of it by hand.

brake pipes usually go rusty first especially at bends or unions where the metal was worked/fatigued during fabrication.

if you can leave traces on the ground from dislodging it probably best to leave it to a brave idiot to buy.

I have spent many hours under rusty cars welding or making repairs, nowadays there are plenty that are not rusty for the same price.

I recently went to buy a 2017 RX450h, a Glasgow car already decomposing with rust at rear suspension mounts.

Instead I paid £1000 less for a ‘clean’ example
