is there any way to access the black trim at the shifter.

some kind of rattle from there that goes away when i press on it. Want to have a look to see if some bits and bobs are trapped in there.

Yes it's easy enough.

Lift the armrest, pry out the seat heater switch control and then carefully pull up the wooden part of the centre console. It can be disconnected or just put to one side and then you should have access to the gear lever surround. The silver cover clips on, I can't remember if it is secured by screws too but it should all be obvious with the wooden panel removed.
