PHEV charging overseas

Recommended Posts

I may get my NX 450h+ before I go on holiday.  I will be staying at a very remote farmhouse in South of France.  Any idea if it is safe to charge the car from the French domestic leccy supply and what I will need to do this?  Can I use the Lexus supplied UK 3-pin cable with a 2-pin adapter, or will I need a new 2-pin charging cable?

The owner's handbook does mention charging in France will take longer, at a lower amperage. It also states not to use extension cables or converting adaptors.

I guess the best option is to talk with your dealership, perhaps they can supply a suitable cable for use in France or direct you to a dealership in France? You never know they may have 'loan' cables for overseas trips?

The charging lead is shown on page 63 of the manual and you can see that the plug and plug lead shown is for the UK (Items D and E). This attaches to the CCID (Item F) but can be changed for the plug/plug lead used in different countries; how to change it is described in the manual (page 68) The French version of this short lead and plug from Lexus is your best and safest bet and shouldn't cost too much.

As Peter notes the manual says not to use an adaptor or extension lead and for good reason, it could be dangerous! The ones you buy in diy stores and travel outlets cannot take the current for the length of time you'll be plugged in. Specialist firms, like Tough Leads, do make suitable cables that I would be happy to use. Including a modular system (ModulEV Modular granny charger extension and travel adaptor system) that allows easy connection of proper plugs for various countries; great if you ever intend to tour Europe.

I've tried this adaptor from Tesco, it works fine for me. I charged NX 450h+ for over night without issue.

It's rated 13A, therefore I think 10A draw from 3-pin charger should be fine.

this is very similar looking to the charger being used by a car the other day and night from the ordinary electricity 13amp power source on the Town Quay here where I live

Maybe this is the answer for ordinary UK " charge at home " users too ?
