The extra oil cooler is (usually) for the auto tranny, and even if its overheating it would unlikely register on the engine temp guage. Manufacturers have to cover themselves, and for all they know, you might be towing a ton and a half caravan or boat up and down mountains which would put an abnormal load on the torque convertor - hence the additional cooler. If you haven't fitted one, I would regularly check the transmission fluid (if its got too hot it goues a sort of brown colour and looks burnt).

From the other comments I've read about these auto-boxes they do seem to be bullet-proof, but I imagine having to swap out a blown tranny would be costly...

Oh, and I think most owners manuals recommend towing with it out of overdrive too :winky:

I looked into tow bars a couple of years ago and was quoted £1500 inc oil cooler etc. I only tow occasionally and when I do it's something heavy - horse box, stock trailer or big display unit. On basis tow bars tend to devalue the car as well I just paid £1800 for a 10 year old Range Rover - and I don't minf throwing building rubbish etc in the back either. No good if you are a caravanner or want to travel in Lexus comfort but if like me you only tow as a work horse. The Range Rover has aloso replaced my old tractor to pull gang mowers and chain harrows round the paddocks!

Thanks for the prompt Tim750r, I went and checked my tranny oil (pulled some out on the stick) I wiped it on my fingers (yuk) and it feels/smells nice and clean, and its a nice clean oily colour, so I dont think I've got a problem, but its due for a change anyway on mileage.
