Tale Of Two Tyres

Have been a Lexus owner for over seven years and can only say that until today it has the most trouble free period of my 40 years of driving. I parted company with my trusty LS400 earlier this year and aquiried an 18 month old LS430.All has been well for 4000 miles until I experienced a slow puncture in one of the rear tyres. Took the car into my local garage (non Lexus) for a quick repair and they found that both rear tyres could have exploded at any time. See photo.

As I have only had the car for 4 months I will be paying a visit to the Lexus dealer from who I brought the car early tomorrow and questioning not only thier own service department but also the validity of the RAC inspection.

Will keep you posted.

Tony

I think that the RAC inspection is a load of :tsktsk: :tsktsk: its a piece of paper with RAC logo and ticks on it - may not be the case with some dealers but most definitley was with mine-- as far as im concerned it means :tsktsk:

I kicked off about this very same thing a couple of months ago. I bought my IS200 from a Lexus dealer with a full RAC inspection as part of the deal - one week later the car needed to go back for a new clutch master cylinder, the handbrake tightening, and a few other bits that I'd assumed would have shown up during a normal inspection. Dealer said they'd speak to their RAC guy and let me know their response, nothing came of it so I gave up hassling them.

I think the inspection is a waste of time - it has put me off ever asking the RAC for this type of thing ever again. You never get to see the actual inspection list, a description of any faults found and a ticklist to say they've been sorted out, or speak to the bloke who carries it out - you just get a little bit of card with a signature on it.

I'm guessing if you did have a major problem with a car that hadn't been picked up by the inspection then the RAC would deny all responsibility anyway.

My mate bought a BMW with a blown head gasket. He had the AA inspect it for about £150 and they failed to spot it. I noticed it the next day he brought the car around to show me. My mate got back to the AA who refused to take any responsibility for it saying the gasket might have blown after the inspection. The car had done less than 40 miles after the inspection and the cap had about 1/4 inch layer of gunk on it.

It was only after they were threated with trading standards that they agreed to refund the cost of the inspection plus full repairs at a BMW garage (£750 odd quid).

Their inspection isnt worth the paper its written on. I'd prefer to pay a specialist garage to inspect the car.

You are not the client for the RAC inspections on Lexus used cars so you don't see the report. I don't think they are full inspections, mainly cosmetic.

If you get your own inspection done then get the full one which includes warranty. Even then they don't do that much.

A guy at work had an inspection done on an Audi coupe and it didn't show that the engine had been changed. The engine number is covered by plastic trim and they are not allowed to take anything apart therefore couldn't be checked. But they didn't even tell him they couldn't check it!

 Hmm. MY experience of a thorough AA test was quite different.

The better of-I think-two tests was very thorough.

I was selling a car (Citroen CX GTi) and the buyer invested in this £200+ test. It took about two hours, including jacking the car up at an alarming angle to scrutinise the underside. He seemed to find every little fault. (I was glad; cos there was nothing TOO bad and it sold!)

I guess the answer is to be sure yourself about things. Know someone who's expert on cars who can check for you? :driving:

  • 1 month later...

Sorry to be so long reporting back on this, but due to the sudden death of my Mother sorting out the car was not the first of my prioritys.

Pleased to report that Lexus Bracknell sorted the problem to my entire satisfaction and refunded me in full for the cost of the tyres.

The wheel geometry was out quite badly and they had to fit new bushes to correct. This all took nearly two weeks to sort out as apparantly the Lexus database had incorrect information on the LS430 geometry. Did not mind however as they gave me a brand new GS300 to play with, liked the handling but not as comfortable as the LS.
