15p a mile and you own the car? does that even cover petrol cost?

yeah, sorry perhaps i should explain a bit further. Rather than having a company car, i get a car allowance, so basically i use my own car for work..

That is a monthly payment.

On top of that, i get 15p per mile to cover fuel costs.. and yes, it does just cover the cost of fuel.

20p per mile and monthly allowance

but someone mentioned you might be able to claim the difference between the mileage allowance and 40p per mile back against tax for the first 10k miles in a year. don't know if its true

If you do not work at a fixed place (consultant type) you can claim the difference between your mileage allowance and the base rate of tax you pay.

I've done this since 2001 and it paid for my s/c, induction kit :whistling:

to cream cracked to go into the detail now.

PM me and I'll talk you through it

it is true - you don't get the difference back you get the tax on the difference back.

Basically you are allowed, by the government, to claim 40ppm without being taxed. If you are only getting 20ppm back in expenses then you can claim the other 20ppm. Depending on your tax bracket you would receive 22% or 40% of the 20ppm.

If you get a monthly allowance it doesn't make any difference because you will be getting taxed on that in your wages.
