Rattle & Squeak

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else experienced sqeaking noises from the dashboard in front of the passenger (where the airfilter's housed)? There's also another one from above the driver's door which is especially annoying as its close to my ear!

The local Lexus dealer has tried twice to get rid of the noises but hasn't succeeded, although the 2nd time they apparently put more sound insulation in. To be fair this has caused the dashboard/airfilter squeak to only appear when the car first gets moving when cold, but the driver's door one seems to be worse especially on the motorway.

Its perhaps a trbute to the RX300's quietness that noises that may not be obvious in other cars, really stand out in the Lexus. Any suggestions?

Rex, if you search on 'Dash Creak' you will find that the passenger side creaking dash has been raised before. Search under RX300 and look for this thread: Rx300sel So Far, My experience so far I don't know if these guys ever got the problem resolved. My RX has the same noise but only when its cold which supports the expanding air duct theory. Learned to live with it but would like it sorted.

I had a squeeking noise from the top of my drivers door which was worse on uneven surfaces. I sprayed silicon spray around the door seal and it cured it. Not sure if this is the same noise you have.

Hope this helps

Pete

The dashboard squeak on the MK1 I had, was due to where the plastic front parcel shelf met the window glass rubber seal, and when I had mine new 3 years ago, Lexus said they knew about the problem, but it occurred on some but not all, so no recall. I took it back and the problem was fixed under warrantee.

Don't know if you are having same thing but the symptoms sound the same as when the car warmed up the squeak went.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm pretty sure the creaking noise is coming more from the centre of the dashboard, i.e. the glove box area, which according to the owner's manual is where the air filters kept. Actually they've also given instructions on how to take out and inspect the filter (P225/226). Think I may give it a go to see whether there's any obvious location for the noise.

I'll definitely give that silicon spray a go over the driver's door seal.

I suppose if any of the noises remain I could always take it back to the dealer again to see what they can come up with, luckily its all done under warranty.

I run a long-term test RX300 for What Car? and although Lexus has had the car back to look at the dash, it's still squeaking away. And I'm also getting a rattle from just by the side of my right ear - especially on the horrible concrete on the M6! The luggage cover was also joining in, but that's been replaced and is now quiet!

Other than the rattles, I love the RX - shame it has to go back soon!

If anybody would like to comment on their RXs for publication in our magazine, feel free to contact me on steve.fowler@haynet.com - I'd be delighted to hear from you!

" And I'm also getting a rattle from just by the side of my right ear...."

I've also been tortured likewise. In the case of my RX300-1, it's the seatbelt upper securing bolt, which has play in it. Compare it with the front passenger's by tugging it: if there's play on the driver's, then that's probably the cause.

I asked for it to be sorted at 20K and 30K services. Was told that they'd tried WD40 or equivalent, which eased the rattle but if it came back [which it did within days] then the car has to be returned because, to tighten the securing point, the head lining has to be removed.

Can't face the hassle, but confess that the eattle in my right ear is infuriating!

Hi,

I've also had the same annoying noise in my ear on the right hand side, the car has been in twice now, first time they tried extra insulation the second they replaced the sunroof and it's still there  It's going in again next week when they are going to check the car against a 'snag list' issued by Lexus to see if they can resolve it.

I must admit I'm getting pretty fed up with being fobbed off with excuses from them if I'd bought a £200 Escort I'd expected it but a £35k luxury car it's just not good enough. At least they are not feeding me the 'It's never happened to anyone else' line anymore.

The dashboard rattle on passenger side is a known warranty issue here in Germany.

They have to remove the whole dash and stick some foam rubber to some parts (where the dash lays/connects on/to the chassis).

This is very strange. Seem the forgot some damping material while building the cars.

If this was said before, sorry. Didn't read the whole thread.

Just thought I'd post an update in this roof ratlle problem for all you that have suffered like me

My car went back for the 3rd time this week, they had it for 3 days and have finally solved the problem. Apparently Lexus are aware of at least two potential causes of the problem (and have issued a snag list to dealers) but essentially they have to strip most of the roof lining out to resolve it :o

But I am now the happy owner of a quite RX300 SE :)

My car has just been laid up in the garage for the last few days where it had a nice cold soak whilst I was away.

I had the usual creaking from the area in front of the front pax - more so than I have ever had it before...

however

once the cars interior had warmed up a little all was well and it stopped.

I notice it does it when the temperature is below 10 C.

Will ask dealer to look at it next service....probably March time for me.

I also have a high frequency rattle which is coming from the interior movement sensor cover up by the interior mirror. It simply needs damping with a small piece of foam which I keep meaning to put in there myself but havn't as yet

After now only 1100 miles my RX300-SEL has this creeking, squeak from teh front passenger area which goes after about 10 minutes, the car is now in the dealer, who says they have not heard of this before, but I printed most of the forum reports that confirm we all have this problem. HAS ANYONE OUT THERE MANAGED TO GET LEXUS TO SOLVE IT OR ADMIT THERE IS A PROBLEM. As an engineer I really must agree with other that its something to do with teh A/C pipes or teh heating ducts, which I dont know, but would go for the heating ducts as they are plastic. : Really dont expect this squear from a car near 40k

Hi guys, another lurker coming out here!

Took delivery of a June '04 SE with 9k on the clock a couple of weeks ago, trading an Audi Allroad that had given 50k of service without missing a beat. Lexus dealer is in the same group (and just across the road from) the Audi dealer, very happy with the trade-in.

Comments on this, and a few other, threads:

I have the dashboard creak, sounds like its coming from the passenger side air vent, only when cold - goes away quickly as the car warms up.

Suspension is harder than the "air-sprung" Audi, but its not that bad that I won't get used to it.

MPG currently about 22.5 on a mixed motroway (including queueing), rural and urban road commute. Not had a prolonged m'way run yet (32 soubds very optimistic, but then my right foot is quite heavy!). Can't wait to get the caravan on the back! :crybaby:

No issues with the Audi dealer, first class service at all times.

Wife has a Reanault Megane cabriolet (she'd love a TT, but I spent the wedge on the RX!)

No stone chips - yet! (Had a puncture on day 2, working out the spare wheel storage, in the dark, not yet having read the handbook, was fun!)

Oh, and the RX is Aleutian Grey with Pembroke leather.

Cheers,

(oh no not another) John :driving:
