thinking of purchasing a camera

cheapest i can find is a place in guernsey

but:....

£100 cashback is available from the manufacturers (canon)direct if purchased in the UK :)

Q1 ..is guernsey classed as being in UK ?

Q2 ..if not would the purchase be liable to customs and excise duty`s ?

Q3 ..price states inclusive of VAT , would this be claimable back from UK company ?

price in guernsey is £500 price in uk is £600 ish

dont know what to do :duh:

silly me , i thought it said no .......

so as such it is the same as buying on mainland :)

confused because they have their own tax system, and duty free status

Just got a Canon S70 - looked at all the pro's and con's re: where to buy.

Ended up in Jessops - they will price match any internet prices and you get the camera in your grubby mitts there and then.

Saved about £70 I think just for the asking.

Only slight problem is they won't match off-shore prices due the the disparity in Vat and Tax ...

If the place has a postcode similar to the UK formatted postcode then it is part of the UK.

Ie, Ireland and Northern ireland... NI has a british postcode

Guernsey is very nice in the Spring

Guernsey and Jersey are both outside the UK Vat jurisdiction, so any price quoted from there will exclude Vat but you will have to pay UK tax when brought into England.

If you buy the camera through your company you can claim the vat back anyway.

spent this morning finding this out

one of the queries was wether Canon UK would honour the cashback promise

so rang them to find out

and they said yes !

but they then said " are you thinking of buying from xxxxxx "

and then said "dont"

without saying too much they advised against it as the place in question are high on their list for being rip off merchants

one example of this is advertising the price inclusive of VAT ?? when they dont actually have a VAT system there

then hiding in the small print that VAT and dutys are customers liability

so order has been placed with amazon ! cheapest price and includes a case for free :D
