Servicing Costs

Bear with me guys, only registered as a user today, so just finding my way round....

Just interested to hear other peoples stories about servicing costs. I've booked my IS 200 in for a intermediate service in mid Jan but having read a few posts on here I think what I've been quoted is above the norm.

The service itself will be £189 all in, and I know I need my front pads changing (hope that stops the banging, but probably not....) and I'm told they will come to £90 incl labour. Personally I'd like to get some pads seperately and find a mechanic to fit them rather than the Dealer doing it, must save a bob or 2 surely.

Prices are quoted by the dealer in Ipswich. ** edit ** Pads are possibly more than quoted above as the total will come to £288 something...

Any guideance would be very much appreciated.

Interim services have cost me between £90 and £110.

Anybody who is slightly competent could change the pads - it's an easy job.

Well I've phoned the dealer in Cambridge to see what they would charge me (as I frequent the city every other weekend) and they quoted £120 Much better I thought, so phoned back the Ipswich dealer to find out why such the difference and I was told it's because they would change the coolant aswell. £70 for the coolant and labour seems too steep for my liking. The serviee guy said they recommend it being changed every 2 years, and as it's a 50K mile service, it's due again. Any truth in that ?

Presume there's no reason why I can't have the same mechanic who I'm hoping will do my brakes can't change the coolant for me ?

I need new brake pads soon & will be getting some Mintex pads from a guy on here known as Mr Prolex-UK, he may be able to recomend afitter near you as well. His website is http://www.prolex-uk.com

Do you know whether the Mintex pads will fit ok with normal spec discs ? Just checking in case those pads are designed for something a bit meatier (is that a word...) I've found the detailed instructions on this site, and am definately not going to get the dealer to replace the pads for me.

I've found that I can get the oil needed for the service through my father a lot cheaper than the dealer will charge, but am not sure what's the best grade to go for ? Any suggestions anyone ?

If you go Gold and become a member you will get around 10/15% off your service charges from the dealer, the brakes will be fine as they are direct replacements and I have no idea on what oil! :winky:

The coolant change is correct. After 3 year it should be changed every 2.

If you get a third party to change the coolant still use genuine Toyota LLC (long life coolant)

Thanks for the advice Colin. I phoned the dealer again this morning to check the service schedule on coolant, and I brought up the fact that it was done last year on the 40K service (checked it out last night and have the paperwork to prove it...) and the Service guy then confirmed it didn't need doing this time in that case. Makes me wonder whether it was done last time and at the 30K service and I've been stitched, I do hope not...

He also confirmed they are ok with customers supplying their own oil, which now brings the quote down from originally being £190 odd to a much more comfortable £90.52

Apart from not being too sure what's the best (or suitable) oil to use is, I'm much happier now.

try going to ur local garage they can service ur car to manufactures spec

most garages have auto data which gives a print out as per manufactures service schedu, parts inc brake pads are avalible from most good motor factors eg partco (part of the unipart group)

i work for a small local garage and we pride ourselves on doing a good job as do many small garages.

im getting an interim service and mot next week for £118.

when it is in for a service , tell the service centre not to carry out any other work, unless they inform you first,

supply your own oil

fit mintex pads, as good if not better than original ones,

not hard to do yourself and there is a workshop article on how to do it, if any problems just post it up someone here will help

and as said before join gold, you will almost get your money back straight away :D

My 10k service cost £100 and the 20K cost £225. wiper blades replaced both times.

My mate, who has a Nissan Patrol was quoted £180 and £270 for his first and second services by Nissan here. He got them done for £70 and £110 in a Nissan franchise in Spain. I know it's a long way to go to save a few pounds, but he was travelling up and down anyway (and now lives down there)
