Hello everyone, my name is Justin and I'm new to this board. I had been checking out the board everyday for a while now and finally decided to do my first post, great board you guys got here!

I got a newbie question. I would be purchasing my first car in the United Kingdom (i'm orginally from Hong Kong, but here to study) this May and had pretty much decided on an IS200, most likely a '01. First thing that comes to mind in buying cars in the UK, is approximately how much would insurance cost for me? I did some online quotes a long time ago and it was something ridiculous like 4000 pounds  . Can anyone here give me an idea? Also would stretching for an IS300 be way too unrealistic with insurance? My budget is around 2,500pounds, anything higher would not be easy. I am 19 years old and a second year university student, I live in Newcastle-under-lyme.

Thanks in advance!

If my post is in the wrong section, moderators please feel free to move it, thanks.

Hi mate,

Welcome :D

Somebody of a similar age (22). The car is group 15 as far as I can remember so insurance is not going to be cheap! :excl: I am with Churchill and can use my dads 5 years no-claims since it is insured as his second car with the company. I am classed as the main driver. Insurance is just over £1100 which is not too bad - but I don't really build up my own no claims and I am not insured to drive other cars - but it will have to do for now! :(

I have a friend that has a black IS200 and is 23. He pays £2500 insurance! :nuke::ph34r: He is also with Churchill but has only been driving for 1 1/2 years. I think you are looking at around £3000 for the insurance considerng your age!

To be able to afford, fuel, service and mantain an IS at your age whilest are uni is very impressive! :whistling:

Also forget the IS300 - nice car but I think it may be too much - alot of insurance companies refused to quote me on it! Its Group 16/17

AND A TIP!

Whatever you do........escapt this site before its too late........ otherwise the whole of your student loan will be spent on the car. You find that the kind people here have all these wonderful things that you are compelled to buy! You spend more and more money! Save yourself - its too late for me! I am now one of them :whistling::whistling:

thanks for everyone's kind welcome!

Anees: to be honest, I won't be paying full for the car, but only with my scholarship of around 2,800pounds a year (which doesn't seem like anything now after what you told me!), the remaining costs would be supported by my parents. However 3,000pounds for insurance is still very expensive even with my parents' support, we could get a Ferrari insured for that price in Hong Kong with my dad's no claims, too bad he don't got any here! Hmmm...there has to be a way, there has to be a way.... :crying:

With stupid insurance prices it is little wonder that their are so many drivers risking driving without insurance :tsktsk:

If your dads also got no claims either that could help you then I'm afraid its looking bleak. :(

Yeah there is another way for cheaper car insuarance........

Find a cheaper car a Honda Civic or a corolla, im sorry but at 19 thats very young imo to own a is200 & being a student, you gonna be working as well? When i was 19 i owned a mazda 323 & then bought a Civic ESi auto, i & my friends thought that was impressive for my age back then & did i say insuring it was quite expensive back then even for a honda civic? im 23 now btw & would never pay more than £2k for insurance for any cars.

I do know a student came to uK from HK few yrs back, his dad bought him a JDM celica VVTLi when he was 19, dunno how much he paid for insurance but not cheap, now few yrs gone by now 24 y/o he wants his dad to buy him a 350Z cos he got bored of the Celica!

You can always move to NZ or australia, there are lots of students form other countries there! some people there with Altezza or well known JDM sports cars are VERY young & still at college so insurance & japanese cars there must be cheaper than in UK.

I actully completely agree! When I was at uni I had a Mazda 323 too! :D

I hope I don't sound patronising saying this - if so then I appologise. I was thinking its pushing it abit at 19 with no claims to get a Group 15/16 car. You are better off getting a NICE Toyota Yaris (group 2) very cheap insurance to build up your no claims. I know its not the same but it is better in the long run. In fact I am planning to do the same to help build up my own No claims.

Welcome JU570,

Insurance will be quite steep becuase of your age - try elephant.co.uk as they have been quite cheap for me on my other car.

The insurance group for the IS200 SE is group 12, while the Sport is a group 13, which is quite low when compared to similar enginged competitors.

welcome to the club!

im 21, just finished uni and have two years no-claims. my insurance comes in at £930, but i only have an s model!

.....however, got quotes on all 3 is200 models and the sport was cheaper to insure than the se, but my car budget only just stretched to an S :crybaby::crybaby:

anyway, welcome and good luck with the search!

J.

I bought my IS200 last year at the ripe old age of 22.

At the time when I insured my Lex I had 2 years no claims and a clean license, I checked out approximately 10 insurance companies and received quotes between £630 to £2,200!

I opted for Eagle Star, which I think has now changed to Zurich and paid £630 :D last year. Its up for renewal in March so I am hoping for more of the same.

I just shopped around a lot and in the end got a great deal, I was paying £500 TPF&F on a Clio 16v before the change to Lexus!

Wow some of you are paying some serious insurance premimums!!

Mind you before my altezza I was paying over 1k for the fto, and the puma iirc!!

Justin, as a student do really need a lex? When I was studying I had a brand new 106xsi and then a puma......... I was forever worried about parking the car in the student scummy areas as they were not standard for a start, let alone a pimp brand!

Thanks for everyone's advises and welcome notes! Would it make a difference if I put my dad as the owner? He never owned a car in England though so would that not be wise?

As for getting a Lexus, my parents are really paranoid about my brothers and I driving in other countries. They think we need a safe car to deal with all those highways here compared to all the low speed country roads in Hong Kong, therefore they would not trust something like a Toyota Yaris, this of course is towards my advantage  . Basically anything under 2500pounds would do, regardless of which type the IS200 will be. So I guess its not too impossible of a deal here isn't it?

Again, thank you so much for everyone's useful feedbacks, this is by far the most helpful and friendly board I had stumbled across! Thanks!

tell your parents how dangerous is it over here at the moment and that you wouldnt feel safe in anyhting other than a HUMMER !  :D

Actually i would love to! An H2 would be perfect, add on some bling bling and i'll be the happiest university student alive!

Anees: I think I would just do that and see...again thanks for everyone's advises!

I find online quotes not the greatest, its always better to call up and do some haggling with other insurance brokers. I would try a few of the larger companies like tescos and admiral etc and the the more specialist ones.

I think you have a few hurdles - your age, you're an overseas student (so haven't had a uk licence for long? - in fact have you a uk licence? Reason i ask is one of my uni friends ws from malaysia and iirc she couldn't drive without a uk licenceholder in the car........ but then another friend, she had an international one and she could) I take it your fmaily are not over here?

i know few yrs ago(not sure of now) a Hong Kong resident can get a UK licence in Uk & when they go back to Hong Kong they can get a hong Kong driving licence without taking a nother driving test in hong Kong but still have a uk driving licence, not sure if it can be done the other way round, dont think Hong Kong government accept a US driving licence tho, probably due to amount of car accidents in america & fact that it is very easy to pass your driving test there, did i say u can easily bribe the examiner with some money??!!
