I tend to drive in semi auto 5th gear round towns.

not noticed a problem in either auto or semi

responsive and smooth with the power when you want it

The problem is only noticable when the car is slowed to below approx 10 - 12 mph, then without stopping, if the accelerator pedal is depressed to move away again, thats when it will suddenly snatch. Otherwise I agree, the gearbox is silky smooth at all other times.

The problem becomes most noticable if you slow to the above speed when passing over a series of closely spaced sleeping policemen.

The only way around it is to select the ECT SNOW mode on the gearbox. This desensitises the gas pedal and I belive prevents the gearbox selecting first gear if the car is still moving forward in an effort to prevent inadvertant wheel spin in icing conditions.

I have tried to alleviate the problem by selecting say 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th, but the gearbox will always select a lower gear it requires regardless of your 'manually' selected gear, thus this approach does not prevent the problem from occuring. i.e. You can't actually pull away from a sub 10 mph speed again in 5th. The gearbox will actually be using a lower gear than what is displayed in the gear selected window on the dash.

It would be interesting if you could try a little experiment on a quite road next time you're out and post the results for us all.

Try slowing to below 10 mph without actually stopping, say 5 - 8 mph, and then pull away again and see what happens.

It is worth noting that if the gas pedal is squeezed ever so very lightly, then the problem may not occur, but in every day driving conditions this is fairy impracticle and sometimes simply not just possible during normal traffic conditions.

Leave the gearbox in auto mode and make sure the ECT SNOW mode is off when you try this.

A long straight road is an ideal test area, preferably with ramps fairly closely spaced, such as some residential areas. :driving:

I for one will be pleasantly surprised if you CANNOT replicate the problem which is driving a lot of us mad.

I look forward to your results if you can find the time to try this out for us all

Thanks

Mike G :winky:

Hi all

Regarding lurches I cannot say I have experienced it in my2004 RX300SE-L.

May I put forward a theory, and please don't take it as critisim just my thoughts, is it possibly that members are trying to accelerate away too quickly, therefore not giving the gearbox time to come into operation properly.

All the above seem to use the automatic part of the gearbox but I don't see anyone saying they experience the same if pulling away in manual mode and changing up thru the gears.

Ok shoot me down if I am wrong, and not having experienced the problem I can't say if this is the case or not but it is I think worthy of consideration.

Can I ask those with the fault to report back if it happens in "Manual" mode as well out of interest

I had an IS300 with the same problem - it was just embarrasing having people in the car and having to explain the jerking.

:offtopic: i know this thread is now all RX, but i just thought i'd say that i've never had this problem in my 2 yr old IS300...

back to the RX - i really hope you get something sorted on this guys - might restore my faith that Lexus GB do actually listen AND care about us customers...

My '52 GS300 occasionally snatches between 2nd and 3rd when accelerating, as though the car forgets to ease off the throttle when changing.

Hi Realspeed

I thought using manual was a work around but since discovered that it isn't. This is definetly not being eager on the pedal. I could breath on it and it would do the same. Try approaching something like a speed bump at around 8 mph, after you've gone over the bump gently press the pedal and it will change to 1st and not 2nd which causes the car to lurch due to the sudden engine breaking effect by selecting 1st. You can acheive the same effect simply by driving at the same speed and then engaging 1st. Not very comfortable. :o

Appreciate your comments but if you read my previous post you'll see that the car still lurches even in manual, regardless of the gear selected, also, as Damian points out you literally have to only breath on the throttle pedal and the car will lurch.

It's a real pain and you find yourself unconciously tensing-up in anticipation of whats coming.

I'm certainly not a 'lead foot' driver but to have a throttle pedal as sensitive as this is unsatisfactory. I think its simply a case of the gearbox selecting first gear when it should be selecting, or remaining in second.

I've found that the ECT SNOW mode is the only way to work around the problem at the moment, but this is not something I want to be doing as a long term solution to the problem.

The car is faultless in every other respect and I would still recomend others to buy this car if it were on their shopping list. The dealer service in my experience is second to none.

Mike :)

:winky: Well said Mike, must say i really never noticed the lurching until this posting, but yes the car does lurch in low gear at low speed when you put your foot down.

Hi All,

Have been away and am still awaiting the contact from Lexus GB to arrange the drive in day.

I am assured by LGB that they are getting an enginneer from Belgium and one from the UK to look into this.......but when?

When I last spoke to LGB they said that they were not aware of any real problems and that he number of people registering this issue on the forum was not too high.........well, it seems to me that a few more have started to register the issue.

I think we all need to keep on to our dealers as well as LGB - if enough feed back gets through they will have to listen to us. Meanwhile, our car is getting older and we still want our money back if it is not fixed once and for all.

I am aware that the problem does/did exist on the GS300 as well so maybe its worth opening the issue to the GS300 users as well?

Any thoughts?

Best regards to all.

Michael.

 I have the new GS300SE, no such problems with it. I did have the problem with the RX300SE 2005, which I was not happy with and PXed it for the GS.

The GS has a few probs: boot size not so good, and when fully loaded needs a bit more grunt in mid-range, apart from that it's GREAT, technology way in advance of ANY competiton, interior quality and gauge/screen readability is second to NONE. ergonomics superb, and I drive lots of the competion, today in fact I drove the Phaeton 3.0TDI, NO Thanks. :P

Hi LexusJohn,

I too drove the new GS and agree with you it is a great car. Iactually want to buy one of these to use on the days I dont want to take the DB7. BUT, I won'tbe parting with anymore cash to Lexus until they sort out my wifes RX for us.

Its a great car the new GS and I must say I found it very quiet at speed and really very smooth to drive. The dealer did try to get me to try the bigger engine option butwhen I asked he said that 9 out of 10 buyers were happy with the 3.0 litre. It seemed to be m,ore than adequate for most people .

I hope you enjoy the car............ its very good and the one I drove had no gear change issues (yet)!

Best regards.

Michael.

The only other thing I can think of then is is it not that actual geabox thats at fault but appears to be more down to the engine management system. I would have thought that if the car was put on a diagnostic rig it would show up as a fuel/air mix surge when the gearbox is actually in "neutral" during the upchange/downchange.

Years ago this could be down to a sticking butterfly valve in the carb, but I don't know how the air/fuel mix is governed In the Lexus, it could be down to a faulty electronic chip.

A "Sports" tuning specialist who deal with "chipping" would maybe able to sort the problem shan't mention any company here but they can easily be found if searching the web.

Hi all,

Have had a call from Lexus GB tech department this morning to arrange a visit to try the car. Apparently though, this will be a bit longer than expected as the Belgian team have been told not to come across due to the London bombings!

I live in the New Forest and don't honestly think theres much chance of us being targetted but I guess we will have to wait a bit longer.

The chap I spoke to was a little surprised when I told him that there were a number of cars with the same issue which could also be available for them to try. He actually told me that as far as they were aware ours was the only car with the issue as none of the dealerships have reported that anyone else is experiencing this.

I politely sugested that he read the forum about it to see that others did have the problem.

PLEASE call your dealers and tell them to escalate the complaint then maybe the techies at LGB will start to belive that this issue - in an otherwise brillaiant vehicle -does exist.

I will post agin when I have date from LGB .

Best regards to all.

Michael.

 Hi Micheal, keep at them, they will not respond easily, I had paint issues with my RX apart from other things, a money refund was going to be very hard to obtain from them, settled for a PX deal instead ( with some goodies from the "lexus collection" thrown in) will shop around other lexus dealers when it's time to upgrade as some dealerships offer more than others. :whistling:

Hi John,

Will do - you can trust me to get it sorted out or to get the car changed again, I will NOT go away or give up.

My dealership know that already from the last RX!

Like you, they diod a deal with LGB and got it sorted - or so we all thougt.

The rest as they say is history..funny how it manages to repeat itself so soon though!

Best regards.

Michael.

Mlady, are you still looking for a 2nd RX with this problem to show to Lexus GB when they visit? I live in Poole and depending when it is may be able to come along.

I live in Essex, but could possibly make the trip down as well, so they could at least have several cars to look at, let us know.

What a load of :tsktsk: !

I insisted the service manager from Lexus Guildford earlier this year log this with LGB. He assured me he had and I do believe him. The LGB HQ technical manager (can't remember his actual job description) said what you've said above about them not knowing anything about this earlier this year when you were going through the stages of rejecting your car and your dealer supposedly talking to LGB.

I don't expect so much bull from a company such as Lexus. I completely agree with you Michael, I too will not give up. Only this morning when stuck in traffic a feather blew in through the sunroof and landed on the pedal, before I know it I've split my coffee and dropped my phone :tomato:

Not really of course, well the bit about the phone and the coffee I made up but the feather causing the car to lurch was true

Look forward to hearing when they're coming over, would like to see their reaction first hand when they experience it for themselves.

BTW, could they bring some Belgium beer for each of us with them too?

Hi all

I took my recently purchased two year old RX back to Lexus Stockport on Friday last week regarding the aggressive acceleration at low speeds, the gear box drops a cog or two and lurches forward at a vast rate of knots, even under moderate throttle.

I have driven a Subaru Legacy Outback for three years on an auto box and never had this effect unless I wanted it on the kick down.

I see that the problem is the point of gear change, down shift is to high up the rev band. The car while still in motion upto about 12 mph should not shift into 1st gear at all unless the throttle is hit hard for the reason of puring on power, gentle acceleration does not seem to be possible.

Lexus Stockport told me that this is a trait of the vehicle, nothing they can do about this.

I would gladly demonstrate this aggresive behaviour to any one at Lexus that says it does not happen it does and can and probably will at some point cause an RX driver to rear end another car.

Sorry that s my ten peneth on the matter.

 I get a destinct feeling that the "lexus experience" is a one off first time buyers privilege, after my first lexus (RX300SE) the experience disappeared and has not returned, my next car may not be a lexus. :geek:

This is my first Lexus and we have not yet received the Lexus experience on ANY occasion that I have heard others have been graced with.
