It's probably worth pointing out that Subaru are looking to raise their prices, so I suspect all Japanese manufacturers will do the same to capitalise on the perceived quality image, and to distance themselves from the Koreans.

Sounds like the Lexus is still 20% cheaper than the BMers, and you won't have to wait 3 months for it to be built to your precise specification.

What I'm trying to say is that the era of the really cheap executive quality car may well be over.

Trouble is, Lexus have always strived to under cut rivals even if they offer more spec as standard. Think a sudden change in pricing strategy may be detrimental to sales. But who knows? Time will tell.

Look on the bright side, people who arent planning on buying a new IS are fortunate that the higher price new IS should minimise the de-valuation of their current car.

I think there are a number of current IS owners are going to vote for the IS250 with there feet. Likely winners will be BMW, Honda, Audi, Jaguar amd maybe Volvo.

It's time for Lexus GB to listen what people are saying and do something before they publish the prices prior to launch. It doesn't matter how good the cars are -  people looking at least £15k to change for a car of same spec. that was £24k two years ago.

Already started - My choice so far is a X-Type Diesel Automatic - Lexus GB - your making a BIG MISTAKE!

yep - i was actually considering it until i saw the prices...

so im probably going Audi..

I've put a deposit down on an IS250 (fully refundable) and am now seriously considering looking at alternatives now, based on the elevated prices (relative to the prices I was expecting). Also, ideally I wanted to go for the Is250 sport + media pack, but this model won't be out until April next year, which either gives me some more time to save up, or a chance to change my mind!

The problem is my dealer has 500 deposit and said its not refundable even now...when the pricing is not confirmed...so he wants me to buy the car at any price. He said he did me a favour in taking my P/X but I'm sure i lost about 1-2K by selling it trade anyway.

I think if the pricing doesn't alter I.m either going to buy an expensive car or lose 500 quid.

I have also put £500 down for a new IS diesel but the dealer told me that I could have the money back right up until test driving the car. And thinking about it how can the dealer say that you can't have the cash before you've even driven the car?? If they maintain their stance I would be see the manager and if that fails take it to Trading Standards.

I would question the legality of that mate!

yeah, from a legal standpoint you are entitiled to your money back up until they provide you with the final details (actual price, colour, options etc) at which point you can choose to withdraw your deposit.

Up until you have chosen the model, colour etc, you can get your money back - and if the dealer refuses, tell him you will take the issue up with Lexus GB, followed by your solicitor (and see how fast he changes his mind).

The thing is I have traded my car in and i feel somewhat tied to the dealership.

The price and options were made available to me but I did not place an ORDER as such although i signed the order sheet with no details of car spec , model.

can he insist i order the model for November.. I mean i do want to test drive the vehicle and see if the 250 is for me or the 220d. And if the pricing is like this then do i really need an IS now.

What are my options he did say the deposit would be non-refundable..and at the time the new IS was what i wanted.but on reading the specs/options/price this is a diff ball game.

How would dealerman deal with this....I hope i do buy the IS its a nice car.

I think depreciation is a big worry on the sel is250 especially - I noticed 1 year old RX300s have taken a 3k nose dive in value recently. Apparently thats due to the X5 being replaced soon and the market being flooded with old ones.

I would only have considered the is250 sel with media package (only for sat nav though) and at £32k, I would use drivethedeal.com and buy a GS300 SEL for £36K - much better value!!!

I really wanted an is350 but can you imagine the price - it would be stupid!

IS250 performance looks dull for the price. I could well imagine Lexus losing a lot of it's core customers on this car - are they looking to alienate current buyers (individual, want prestige but appreciate value) and replace them with BMW buyers?

I change my car every year - but this year, due to lack of anything interesting and appauling depreciation on my RX (I reckon £10k at least in 12months) I'm not prepared to keep handing cash over to Lexus when there is nothing of interest to buy!

Lexus used to do great packages and you knew you had every toy but at great value, if that policy is changing, I'll be off to check out other brands!

A mistake, I fear. The brand isn't well enough established to get away with this.

IS250 is too expensive (especially in SE trim) and too slow.

Charging the same for a 4 cyl diesel as a 6 cyl petrol is taking the p***.

I may instead get myself a used 330i or X-Type 3.0.

I was at the Lexus Open Road event on Sunday and whilst on the accompanied test drive of the RX400H (great car btw) I spoke at length with one the Sales guys - he told me he had seen indicative pricing and confirmed the SE will be £26K - this then confirmed my fears that I will not be replacing my 350Z with another Lexus. Shame as I really liked the look of the new IS and was different from the alternatives.

I think it's a case of :tomato: to Lexus on this!

Off topic, but the new GS430 is one superb piece of automotive engineering - even on uneven roads, the car just kept a straight smooth line at, ah-hem, high speed.

The main problem Lexus has made is that there is no 2 litre model. The 2.5 V6 is very competitively priced when compared to the equivalent BMW and Mercedes (especially Audi as they're prices are ridiculous!)

However, with the lack of the 2 litre, the 2.5 is now the entry level model, for which it is too expensive. With the 318 being the most popular model everywhere except the US, I can't help but think that Lexus have shot themselves in the foot

Else they are being very arrogant and considering the US as the only important market (which I guess to some extent it is)

Getting deposits off dealerships is something we seem to encounter a lot in the industry - so you are not the first and you won't be the last! The law itself is actually a bit vague on this point, however, you will normally find that a dealership has the right to take from the deposit "any reasonably incurred costs associated directly with ordering and preparing the vehicle". In other words if you ordered a pink IS200 with leopard skin seats and paid a £3000 deposit and then cancelled the dealer could lawfully take some of that deposit to compensate them for the costs in ordering the car and having to sell it.

However, there is also a little twist in all this! A dealer normally has to supply the vehicle within a "reasonable time period" - this is typically 90 days, in your case even if you ordered it today they couldn't achieve this as November 19th is over 90 days away!

Most sales executives do NOT earn out of keeping customer's deposits, in fact I have always refunded them straight away as I have better things to do with my time than keep taking calls from irrate customers. Plus, I have never met a customer who has turned round and said "ok I will buy it then!" so as a salesman you will never get the deal anyway!

I wouldn't bother contacting Lexus GB as they don't own any of the dealerships anyway so their answer will probably be something like "it is down to the descretion of the dealer". Also don't go shouting off about getting your solicitor involved or taking them to court! It isn't worth it.

Find out who the dealer principle/general manager is of the dealership and write to him/her, explain the reason for cancelling the order and thank them for the service that you have received and assistance with your part exchange. Then ask if they would be kind enough to refund your deposit.

Almost all dealers will do this. If the dealership is owned by one of the big groups such as Arnold Clark, Inchcape, Sytner etc... you will not have to worry as a letter to head office will always work. But start with a polite letter to the dealer principle.

Hope this helps, keep us informed.

By the way we are refunding all our customer's deposits if they say "no", so if anyone is worried about placing an order let me know!!

I wonder if customers cancelling orders due to the unexpected high UK prices is feeding back to the manufacturer yet ?

As far as I understand the situation, the IS series is currently the main selling range for Lexus and therefore may be instrumental in keeping the brand alive in the UK. The other models are in a highly specialised area and most buyers just cannot afford the £30k plus for these luxury models.

If Lexus put the new IS series also in a high league then how many cars a year are they going to sell in the UK ? Quite a lot less than anticipated I think.

Yes, BMW have some of the 3 series priced close to and above £30k but how many of those do you see compared with the more reasonable 318i which circulates around the £20k mark before optional extras are added ?

My current one is early 2004 and I was planning to change circa March 2007 but I will be hanging on for 4 or 5 years instead if prices remain as rumoured. Even then I might have to look elsewhere.

Lexus dealers will get more service and repair work but the manufacturer and sales departments will lose out I feel.

when ever I come on this board I can't help but feel sometime that its full of aspirational boy racer types and I am not sure of quite quite what I am doing on it ( that said I keep coming back)

I have to admit I paid less for my car (is200 se auto navigator 52 @ 24K ) than I paid for a rover 220sdi new in 97 and it was certainly less than I was recently looking at paying for a fully outfitted new passat or accord.

Looking at the sales package from the sheffield dealership and the prices, I would have to think twice (about replacing the car with the new model but it got me thinking.

Maybe the uncomfortable truth is that if you feel you are unable to afford the price of the new car, then in Lexus's eyes you are not the target market for their products,

Is this something similar to what happened to bmw with the precieved image that cars of a certain age are then picked by pimps or drug dealers etc and it takes the shine of the brand and lexus have learn't from this and are moving to take the new car out of the "undesirables" reach ( me included ).

I wonder if the high price of the new IS will boost the second hand value of the current model? ie people won't be able to buy or trade-up to the new model so there will be greater demand for the current one.
