A full format would remove this 'F***ING' program i know that..... but i have so much info and delayed email for repley i cannot afford to lose the data.

I dont know what i am asking for LOC..... It just makes me F :tsktsk: ING mad that these 'harris oles' are able to do this.

Oh..... 'cats' back.

Heathrow.... 'incoming'

Have to admit that all the spyware and ad stuff floating around now does my head in!

It's one of the reason's I moved to the apple Macs, they don't suffer from this problem to be honest :D

If it is spyware you have Tony, then try this program:

http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Spybo...oy/1043809773/1

It will clear all the crap off your machine and try and keep it that way :D

As for popup windows and stuff like that, if you are using Internet Explorer you can install the Google Toolbar which is ok and blocks popup windows (think Firefox blocks them anyway!) :)

IE version: http://toolbar.google.com/index_2

If I was closer mate I'd come round and have a look for you!

Tony the spyware on your machine is simply used to gain information about your browsing habits so that you can then recieve targetted adverts based on the type of websites you vist.

Are you still running Windows 98? Its not really secure at all - XP is far better but if you've still got the same PC as before its not really going to run it very well.

Try a few Spyware removal tools to keep it undercontrol. Go to:

www.download.com and download: Spybot Seach and Destroy and Ad Aware SE. These two programs should help with your Issues. Microsoft AntiSpyware is also very good good but not compatible with Window 98.

I'll try and post the links up but I'm just on the move at work at the moment. :D

EDIT: Aido is a faster typer and beat me to it!

Hey Tony,

I know how you feel with what you are explaining to us.

And agree, a re-format will sort it out (for now...) but is not always feasible.

2 other things for you to try:

1) Might be obvious, but check in the Add/Remove programs for any dodgey looking sw that seems to have installed :duh:

2) Run MSConfig (assuming you are on Windows 2000 or XP). The last tab "Startup" shows what gets loaded when you boot Windows, and amongst them, may be some stupid pop-up advert program etc. Just uncheck the box to dodgey looking entries. :nuke:

A last one just depends on how familiar/confident you are with the Windows registry. Can help to see if any alien software is installed, and be able to remove them so that they stop coming back.

I'd also recommend using something like Avast (www.avast.com) to stop virus's...it's free and auto updates its definitions.

I also use Zonealarm to stop most stuff getting in....again standard version is free

and finally "ccleaner"...crap cleaner (www.ccleaner.com) to remove all the crap most programs leave on the pc, again free...

Being the typical mean Scotsman I hate paying for this stuff.... :D

Zonealarm is brilliant. You can download a trial version of the firewall/pop up blocker and pest control from them. Its only a few dollars for the licensed version and you get frequent updates.

Also you should allow Automatic Updates to update the pc with all Microsoft patches that are released every 2nd Tuesday of every month. This month there were 9 released, to give you an example.

Tony, just sit down with her and calmly "suggest" that she's been looking at sites not really suitable for her.

She will either say " yeh... what of it???"

or exclaim "No I aint!!!"

You then need to calmly explain how there are way's of you knowing each time these sites are accessed, so there's no hiding from the fact.

Maybe/hopefully the sheer embarrasment of her knowing that you know will deter her from the occational sneeky

To be honest mate, there's not really a great deal you can do to stop kids these days... mind you, my three were "born to be wild!" :o

Tony,

If your children download music from the internet it can be very easy to to end up at unsuitable sites with just one accidental click. I have also found that alot of the online gaming sites can eventually link up to othe dodgy sites.

I'd give the girls the benefit of the doubt and also get some content filtering software for your PC just as an extra precaution. i've not used any for the home for a while but remember Net Nanny is supposed to be ok? Sure others can advise.

if you are paying someone to fix this, ask them to

1 - install an operating system that supports users and rights. XP is fine if you like windows - pro is even better.

Get them to setup an administrator account, and make it very random - they can write it down and you keep it.

2 - setup your account, your wifes, and the girls accounts as simple users - even better guests.

3 - get them to give you an image of the final build - on a CD / DVD is fine. Norton Ghost 2003 will do this nicely.

4 - Install anti virus software. Avast is good and free for home use. Set it to auto update every day (defintions and program).

Dont believe that changing browser or platform is the answer.

Firefox has more serious exploits than internet explorer right now, and Mac's security through obscurity is hardly better than any security at all.

Use the security offered by the operating system to ensure that you control the software on the machine. If your users cannot install stuff - then malware will not be able to install itself either.

wise words indeed.... let me be honest, i allow my 15yld to download all the crap she wants onto her pc music/ ring tones and all that crap  if it goes 'tit's up' then she would know why.

What hit me was she.... ( or somone ) has used my pc?.... to view 'naughty', not hard core s*x sites...

I feel i must 'run silent' and watch her.... block nothing and see were she goes, healthy my wife would say.... typical nurse..... worried i say...typical father.

Agree with what you're saying mate as it's all sensible stuff, the major worry I have with Windows lately is some of the root kits that are coming along, yes they still need an entry point but it's pretty worrying what those things can do nowadays!

As for the Mac, if you've got the firewall turned on and AV software installed then not sure what's wrong with that? The userbase is growing and yes it is inevitable one day that someone will launch a major exploit but so far I've been very lucky with the system and apple release updates / software updates on a regular basis to ensure you're safe!

Think as you say the main concern nowadays is that everyone is running IE on Windows while their user context has administrative priveleges, it's a security nightmare :o

Slightly  :offtopic: , but is there any way of stopping the emails I get every p*****g day about ***** enlargement, viagra, diploma's, corporation junk etc, etc, etc...?

I joined bluesecurity... www.bluesecurity.com you basically set up a free account and then forward all the junk email you get...they collate it and then track back where it comes from and then ask for it to be stopped and if not start sending emails to where the junk comes from.

I joined about 2 months ago and junk email wnet from loads to just about zero... not exactly an email washer buts sorts the route cause...
