Cryo Treatment For Brake Rotors/discs

Hello,

Was just reading up the FAQ on www.mkiv.com. Came across a FAQ regarding the Supra brakes and ran across this...

Next consider cryo

treatment of the rotors to prolong the life of the rotor.

Just wondering if anyone has done this? Or is it really worthwhile having the discs treated?

Ah - cryogenics.... freezing discs. Can't say I know of anyone whos done it - although I've heard about it in the US (both good and bad)

Heard about coaling the discs (DE: aufkohlen). to get a harder surface. never heard about cryo.

just thinking - as ur braking the discs/pads wear so if the discs are harder than before it just means that you will be going thru pads quicker

I may have some people in mind who may be willing to do a Cryo job on some discs. I'm definitely thinking of doing this with my next brake disc change.

Regarding going through pads quicker, I'd guess that if the pad was suitable for street use (Project Mu pads?), that they'd probably make for more durable brakes, that lasted longer between replacements?

but how much does the treatment cost vs the cost of new pads n discs?

Well I don't think it should cost too much...last I checked the people that I had a word with about Cryo (local to me and know them from my work place), it's all dependant on weight. Maximum price is around the region of £35-40 for a pair of discs, which isn't too bad IMHO. Since aftermarket discs cost upwards of £150 a pair and pads about £50 a pair, I think it's worthwhile, but I'll definitely give you some sort of feedback once I get this done :).

the feedback would have to be after many many months as you will not see any difference for ages
