my girl friend and her brother were on there way home before. For one reason or another they were followed and chased by three people in a whiye van.

They tried to shake them off but never at a set of lights 500 yards from the police station where they where heading one of the lads threw a hammer at the car and smashed the car window

they also hit the front wing of the car.

Couple of questions

1) They followed them on the East Lanc A5080 and went through a major junction and there is a camera looking at the junction - can the police look at this camera and get the car reg as it was not got during the incident?

2) Do you have to claim off your own insurance if they are not court?

Just waiting for the police to come out.

Just glad no one was hurt.

cheers

Sorry to hear about your events ...........

With regards to the camera, depending on the location of the camera.

If it's a council run camera (CCTV), then the police will have instant access to it.

If it's a motorways (traffic monitoring) then it would take longer for that to be viewed, but this is still possible.

With regard to the insurance, the best thing would probably to repair the vehicle, keep the receipts and invoices, and hope that the person is caught, so that you can then claim the damages from court.

Yup... bit of bad new there... but people in white vans dont just chase people down the street for no reason... it might be a case of mistaken identity or you've only be told half the story.

Anyway... that camera..... It's more than likley to be a borough or county coucil camera rather than a Highways Agency camera as you mention a A road (trunk road) but there are some HA cameras on trunk roads also, if you have a picture of the camera I could tell you better.

It is unlikly that the camera was recorded. It costs a small fortune to do this and has significant complications due to the data protection act.

If it was dark it is unlikley that you will see anything that resembles a VRN anyway, unless the camera is specificaly set up for that role... in which case, no chance of getting a recording either ;).

I wouldnt pin your hopes on the camera at all. Very few cameras are subject to 24/7 recording, though this is changing, but with the current technologies in place, you'd be lucky to tell the colour and type of car, let alone the VRN, unless as stated previously, the actual use of the camera is for ANPR.

wofflle mode off :)

Best bet is to get the crime number and pass the VRN and crime number on to the insurance company and let them deal with it, it's what you pay's the premium for.
