Let Off With Speeding...has Anyone Else Been

A few weeks ago I was driving back from York on the A64 at about 11pm on a Sunday night. Roads were fairly clear and I wasn't particularly in a rush so I wasnt keeping an eye on speedo.

Anyway I was approaching a car and looking to overtake, I noticed a car fairly close to my rear end so put my foot down and over took the one in front pretty quickly. As soon as I did I then pulled in to inside lane to let the other car past....only he pulled in behind me. Thats when I looked in mirror to see if I could see any lights on the roof of car behind...sure enough it was a traffic cop so started flashing the blue ones and I pulled in :tsktsk: I knew that I was going faster than I should have been but not sure how fast.....

Anyway after winding window down he told me that he had clocked me doing 100mph and asked me why I was speeding.

I said that I couldn't really comment on the speed because I was paying attention to the road ahead and driving to the conditions so I couldn't say weather I was doing 100mph or not. And I also said that I felt a little bit intimidated by him driving so close to my rear end so put my foot down to overtake the car in front. He then said that I shouldn't have been racing him, I pointed out that I wasn't and that I pulled into left to let him over take at the 1st opportunity. I stated that I wasn't in any hurry to get to my destination.

He then proceeded to remind me that its a 70mph limit and to watch my speed more carefully and let me off. :D

Now everything that I said to him was totally honest, but I'm not sure if I got let of cos I didn't admit that I was speeding, or because he believed that I was being honest

Having dealt with the traffic police on a number of occasions this is the 1st time that I have dealt with one that didnt follow the rule book to the letter. Most of them are complete b****rds (I have a friend who is an inspector in the ordinary police and he agrees). If only more traffic cops were equally understanding sometiems then perhaps they wouldnt have the reputation they currently do.

Anyway have any of you ever been let of with similar offences? :whistling:

Going back a way.............ok to around 1988 (ish), was in a car with a friend going past a local airfield at 100+ (3am)....... we got stopped and the copper says."Whats up wing-co couln't you take off", this completely confused us! (A copper with a sense of humour.........unheard of)

Anyway, we got let off with a little bit of a "dont let me catch you doing that again" and sent on our way.

In all i think i got stopped around 3 times in the 80s-early 90s and got let off.

It was a good time then....no cameras etc.

I was given a lecture about the accident record on the road I was on etc but was let off doing "in excess of 40 in a 30 limit". The road was a wide, straight two lane main road heading out of town with no schools etc otherwise I guess I'd have got a ticket. I probably looked pretty shaken and contrite at being pulled over. I just said yes sir, no sir etc. When he left me he was going over the limit on the motorway (no lights) so I guess he was in a hurry to get somewhere.

Never been let off speeding but nice mr plod didn't feel the need to detain me further or hit me with a £30 fine for no front plate. I was genuine and honest with him (reason no plate I am waiting for a square one thats on order) letter of the law he coulda 7 dayed me and £30 fined me and also given me a lecture but he was cool. They aren't all bad lol and do remember they have a job to do as well.

It comes down to three things:

. What kind of copper he/she is

. What kind of a day he/she is having

. His/her first impression of you

I've been let of with loads of stuff in the past, I even got let off with speeding because I was wearing a Birmingham City Football Shirt (before they were in the Premiership). Instead of having the usual lecture which normally replaces any penalty, all I got was a 15 minute conversation about football. Top Copper! :D

Once got pulled on the M56 in my old Fiat Brava apparently doing 84mph. Copper was writing a ticket and producer when I mentioned I couldn't produce in 7 days as my licence was at DVLA as I had just moved house.(Completely true)

Got lecture about if can't produce would have to go to court, 6 points £200 fine if guilty. Copper then said can't be bothered with paperwork don't do it again and let me off. Phew! :D

Some 15 yars ago approx, myself and 2 colleagues were racing in convoy down the Flint coast road in our Company Granada 2.8 ghias :)

As we approached the 30 zone ahead, we slowed from 100+ mph, and as the tail-ender, I spotted a cop bike in my rear view, right up my jacksy - s**t where'd he come from :excl:

He pulled alongside me, and I noticed my mate in the middle car of the 3, P****ing himself laughing. By now we were down to around 30 ish, and the cop looked straight into my eyes through the side window, and just wagged his finger at me, then gestured his hand up and down slowly, in other words, "slow down, you naughty boys" - then he accelerated away with a quick rearward wave of his hand !!! Now THAT was more than lucky :)

Only other time I got away with a ticking off, was on an almost deserted snake pass, as a 21 yr old, in my then pride and joy BMW 2002 :D

Young lady cop blue lit me from behind, and after asking why I was in such a hurry, ( silly question really to a 21 yr old bloke in a beemer) complimented me on my car, chit chatted for 5 mins ( guess she was lonely :) ) and told me to take it easy. I still wonder now whether I should have been real cheeky and asked her for her particulars...

Got let off once, when I was 18 in a done up MK2 Escort.

Coming through Headingly, when it was 2 lanes both directions.

Unmarked astra with two guys in started chasing me as I had undertaken an old biddy. At this point I was not speeding (rare but true).

To cut a long story short, after more under taking, overtaking in the the "third lane", and driving like a total tw4t they eventually caught me at lights and started to get out. This guy was huge. I was not hanging about, so set off, they tried taking me before the next lights, but could not manage it. So at the next llights he just put a helmet in the windscreen.

I s**T myself, anyway when in the back of their car they asked what was that all about.

I said all I knew was two guys were after me, I did not know they were police, just because they flashed their headlights at me, and I was not going to hang about to be beat up. (which was what I felt like)

They let me off, they were actually really good and had a chat about how they drove before being cops. Just had a producer.

A few months later got done going in the opposite direction, one cop car hiden the other 1/2 mile up the road. I was belting along, and could see this car (it was dark) gaining fast so put my foot down. So did he - he must have been really going - maybe a 100 in a 30 to close so quick. As we were sat in the front of his car he commented on how quick mine was - yeah not quick enough though eh !! 3 points and £30 fine. (1988)

Couldn't you SEE her particulars? ;) :P

I think you should consider yourself extremely fortunate. I got done doing 64 mph in a 60mph limit in 2000. £60 fine and 3 points. The really galling thing was that there were cars absolutely flying past me that day but I bet they all got away with it!

got pulled over on Christmas day doing 130mph in my 325i sport, and on my phone on the motorway. Cop asked where i wqas going in such a hurry, told him my girlfriends, and he just told me she must be something special then. then told me too slow down, get off my phone, and have a good Christmas. He was a nice guy.

Stopped a few weeks ago in the same car, argued with him, he breathalised me, then told me to put on a non-illegal plate but he wasn't going to report it. Found out in the end he only pulled me over cause im 22 in a £30k car. Ah well. I still got a clean license though.

I consider myself just as fortunate over these two incidents, as I do UNFORTUNATE over many other situations where myself / relatives have been unfairly treated. For example.....

My Father who is 84 and has driven (pretty well too actually) gets stopped for doing 44 ( as per his speedo ) in a 40 Zone, and is fined £60 and given his first ever 3 points. Typically taking none of the circumstances into account ( early morning, hardly any traffic, JUST inside the zone, etc ), the copper obviously needed to up his quota for the week. This sort of blind justice is exactly what turns people ( Including my law abiding old man ) against the police.

Back in my biking days, my brother and I were out for a Sunday blast in the Scottish countryside. Me on my Fireblade, and him on his Guzzi Daytona. Most of the time we behaved, but at one point we were baulked by a string of 4 cars for several miles doing 45-50 mph. When we got to a long, clear, empty straight, we both overtook, with my brother in front. As you do, and as the Police advanced drivers recommend, we didn't dawdle by the cars, but overtook promptly.

What we didn't know till several miles down the road, was that there was an unmarked poilice car parked off the road with a Vascar, just after the point where we had overtaken. As a Vascar can only get one vehicle at a time, my brother pulled the short straw, and was caught doing 100.9 mph. Result 6 month ban and hefty fine. I got a talking to, and it was suggested that I was probably doing a similar speed, but since I hadn't looked at my speedo (honest) I couldn't confirm it.

I was gutted for my brother, but it's all a lottery really!

IanB :D
