Beleive it or not.. LG is supposed to be very good. LG make the screens for Sony so get a better deal by buying LG... every LG plasma i have seen has been really nice.

Phillips not so good at Plasmas

I aggree with steve LG are good for the money, if its not an issue go for the pioneer or the panasonic, my next door neighbour has just bought a samsung 42" and its great but sucks at multi inputs. its doesnt need to be HD ready as sky only are bringing it out in april time on certain channels , there will be a conversion box for it available when you need to have it.

Me personally i would go for the panny my missuses mum and dad have one and its amazing

There are now only 4 main manufacturers for tv's ........

One of them being LG.

They make a lot of the parts for SONY, and SONY just assemble to the TV's .... in countrys like Spain !

I recently advised a friend to get an LG 32" LCD ............ from Currys, no worries !

Friends have a 52" Fujitsu and it's awesome, best piccy quality I've seen for a long time. It even compares to my Toshiba 36" CRT which is impressive.

Buy the best you can afford. Bear in mind what you want as a future set up though, i.e. how many scarts you want and what you want exactly from your system.

There's a mag called "What Plasma" which has all the reviews in. I bought a Hitachi 42" plasma based on its recommendation and I've been delighted with it.

Deffo get HD ready - you'll regret it one day if you don't

I found which model I wanted and then bought it from a company on the net after doing a price search with the comparison engines, like Kelkoo

The best advice I can think of -- and it sounds obvious but for some reason is not followed by many people -- is to make sure you see them in action, and choose the one that looks best to your eyes. Also, don't just go on the basis of 3 seconds of Monsters Inc on the shop floor in Curry's. Bring a selection of DVDs to a specialist dealer and ask to try them out. There's no point dropping a couple of grand on a TV if you don't know how it looks.

Also, when it comes to plasmas, you generally get what you pay for. If you see a plasma advertised for a price that sounds too good to be true, steer clear.

When I bought a plasma a couple of years ago, I found www.avforums.com to be a great source of knowledge and advice. I ended up with the 43" Pioneer, and I'm really happy with it.

Best of luck,

Si

hope i can help a little as ive just bought a 37" Panasonic Plasma that is awesome and i had all the questions that youve just asked.

I orginally wanted a LCD, as in the bedroom at the moment i have a 26" Sharp LCD that over the last year has been awesome. Sharp are supposed to be the leaders in LCD technology as they sold off there other technology to speacialise in this area. Due to it going into the lounge i required a TV with a larger screen and decided on a 37" and after looking around i found a superb LCD LG one. As previously mentioned LG do awesome TV's and what most people dont know is the likes of SONY rebadge them and call them there own  In the end i purchased a 37" Panasonic Plasma not LCD this was due to the picture refresh rate. The general rule of thumb, so ive been told is that anything above a 32" should be plasma. I was shown a comparison between a 37" LCD and 37" plasma with a football game being played and when the ball was kicked with LCD it was blurred however the Plasma was crystal clear. The difference between LCD and Plasma is life longativity with the LCD lasting longer. However to 'extinguish' the life of a plasma you have to watch it for 8 hours a day, every day for 5 years :excl: Who is ever going to do that? The colours on the plasma are also frankly amazing compared to my LCD. Regarding the HD issue' HD stands for 'High Definition' which is where TV is supposed to be going in the next 2-3 years wih SKY bringing out its box sometime this year with limited programes available to view. Mine has a high defination screen however it isnt 'technically' HD ready i have to plug an adapter into it such as a sky box or the Xbox360 and upon doing this anything played through them comes out onto the TV in high defination and trust me its awesome :excl: mine has a full digital box installed within the TV and with the digital era fast approaching i felt that this was more of must than it being HD ready + they wanted an extra £600 for the equivlant TV that was HD ready. I personally dont think HD will fully come in for at least another 5 years. Digital was supposed to have arrived 3 years ago and we are still waiting for the transition.

The reason why i bought Panasonic was purley for the deal i got as i had a £400 stand thrown in for free. Yes the TV was expensive but after watching Wind Talkers on it it was mind blowing! And the Xbox 360 looks as if you are actually in the game!

I hope this helps a little

Thanx to everybody who has helped so far. I think i have narowed it down now to a 42" Plasma LG. At the budget end say £1K - £1.5K i havent seen anything with a better screen yet.

One question remains! is it best to go for the highest number of pixels? i notice one batch of TV's is sort of 840ish X whatever pixels and the others are 1000+ pixels, is that the way to go?

cheers again especilay Dan!

the true HD sets will come with the higher pixel rate

the highest HD res at the moment is 1920 x 1080 pixels also know as 1080i

I got a 50" Sony 3LCD tv, its not wall hangable but it is very thin for a rear projrction lcd Tv and the pictures are stunning in HD, and you can plick them up for around £1200.00

These are priced well for Samsung.

http://www.digiuk.com/

I've just bought one of these (42" HD ready) and am well impressed :)

Me too. I had previous samsung plasma for about 3 and half yrs with any problemss, and the new one is fantastic too. Only drawback is only 2 scart sockets, but for £1500 i dont think there's many better alternatives in my opinion. Picture quality and sound are excellent.

digi-uk are excellent also.....best prices around, very knowledgable and helpful staff, and very good delivery too

The best plasma to buy at the moment is the Pioneer pdp 436 XDE if money is no object, I have just got one and it is amazing better than my LG 42 which I have had for 18 months.

You have mentioned HD ready you need to look at which connector you will need either HDMI od DMI. What are you going to connect the plasma to?

The more expensive plasma like the Pioneer have both but the cheaper ones do not.

You mentioned around £1500, the best plasma for around that price is the Hitachi 42 7200.

Make sure you get the plasma with all the correct numbers as alot of the manufactures make different plasma with differing quality pictures etc at cheaper prices so watch the model nos carefully!!!

Make sure whatever you buy has at least 768x1028 pixels to be able to get High Difination TV, less pixels and you will not get the true picture.

Make sure you used decent quality leads to get the signal into your plasma or you will not get the true picture quality

If you want more help let me know

The problem with projection TV's so im LED to believe is that they can 'burn' the screen if left on i.e. with a PS2 etc and also the picture degrades with time, i could be wrong though...... :shutit:

Old rear projectors worked on tube technology and did burn LCD should be OK. It is also worth noting that Plasma's can aslo suffer from "burn".

Sorry to hi-jack this thread, but i'm also in the market for a tv for my new place. I have a lounge that is 15ft by 15ft sqaure and a 32 in LCD would be most suitable. i've decided that this would be suitable. I have a budget of £1k, possibly may be able to stretch to £1200

I'm not keen on plasmas as i've heard that they can burn out?

Any other suggestions are most welcomed....Thanks
