Flat Battery

Recommended Posts

I have a weak Battery today. Engine won’t start. Internal electronics seem fine. Has anybody tried the cigarette lighter recharger from Argos. There is no need to lift the bonnet. Connects to the cigarette lighter via lead to the jump start car. The other alternative is a jump starter power pack. Any recommendations.

Personally I keep a spare battery and a set of jump leads. That way if the battery dies totally at least I'm not stranded.

I just carry a RAC card and a mobile phone :D

:D

ditto.

You'd have to be pretty unfortunate for the Battery to suddenly die on you miles from home, without any prior warning.

I use to carry a AA card for years but never needed it much and so stoped using it. Although not AA Home start so wont have helped anyway. May just get the Battery changed. Hope its not the starter motor or any other problem. Started the car yesterday and moved it few yards and moved it back. Due to some house work. It was a freezing morning. So most likely the Battery has lost its power. It has to happen some time. So it did overnight.

Good News but hopefully no bad to follow that could cost some heavy cash. I tried to start a few more times and it started. The cranking was weak. Gave it a 10 mile run. The electrics and dash lights were all fine as before. It felt as if the power would not transfer to the starter motor fully. Possibly a weak Battery but it was far from dead or flat. Its either the cold weather the night before starting and shuting causing the power loss or some other non Battery related fault. Hope NOT. Might want to get the Battery changed anyway. So any ideas as to what to watch out for in future.

I go to a specialist Battery supplier (Bristol Batteries, in my case) who will check the state of your Battery, including it's potential.

Synchronistically, Aldi are doing a combination Battery pack and Tyre inflator on Jan 19th. £24.99!!!They do some great 'Specials'...got a CD/MP3 car player that takes ipods AND those computer card thingys-wot-I-haven't- got too, for £50.

  • 1 month later...

Guys my unc just came back from Holiday, phones me up to tell me his IS is dead. It's making a clicking noise (assuming it's the starter motor).

I'm aware that jump starting is a no no.

My questions are:

1) Can it be push started?

2). Can this be done:

Dead Car Starting Method # 1: Preferred method of starting the dead Battery

It's critically important to shut off the boosting car’s engine during the moments of actual cranking of the car with the dead Battery. This does however reduce available power to the dead car because the boosting car's alternator isn't running, a number of "live" boosts make the boosting car's alternator diodes either fail outright or die very prematurely from the extreme current draw on the alternator while cranking the engine on the bad car. So the safest method is to have the good engine running a few minutes to charge the dead Battery. Then shut off the good car's engine and disconnect the cables and start the bad car's engine.

Basically connecting the batteries for a while (to transfer power to the dead one). Disconnecting the leads, and starting the car. If this is possible, how long should I leave the cars connected (and engine running on good car) before I can disconnect all leads and try and start the dead one?

Thanks...

Thanks for the help guys

You know I try my best to help people out when I know something. But as of late, I just find that I'm talking to myself..

I thought being on the boards for over 2 years now, I'd have gained a little bit of respect, in terms of helping each other out.

chill out dude, it's sunday, it is fine to jump start with leads, although it's prob time for a new Battery, it's a '005L' and Halfords should stock it for about £55 if you can't get to a Battery specialist. shouldn't bump start (push start) any car that has a cat as unburnt fuel could ignite in the cat section f the exhaust and cause damage.
