Window Tints

Recommended Posts

I had the fronts tinted to match the rears of my Sport ages ago now. Never had a problem, been pulled on spot checks a couple of times before and they never mentioned the windows at all.

However, my luck ran out the other day and was pulled by a T5, specifically for the windows, not speeding or anything. They put a meter on my front windows, said they were illegal, gave me a £30 fine, and was told to take them out or ill be in court and up for a fine of around £1000!!!! Had to take the car to a VOSA test station to be checked and my form stamped!!!

Has anyone else had a problem with tints or have I just been unlucky??? My tints were perfectly safe in my opinion and never had a problem with vision. It annoys me when you see people, mainly range rovers, with proper 'blacked out' windows AND stupid number plates and they seem to get away with it!! These are the ones that ARE dangerous in my opinion!! :tsktsk:

Anyway, rant over.

Think you have been very unlucky. My rear windows are alot darker than my fronts as this shows a better contrast and in theory less likely to be told to change them.

Feel for you mate and I agree about the range rovers etc etc. How the young SaXo chavs get away with beats me :duh:

Yours looks a little lighter than mine were. Are your rears factory tints?? The fronts look slightly lighter in the pics so you might acually be legal. The guy said mine let 65% light through and the legal limit is 70% minimum.

They do look pretty dark in the pics but werent that bad at all and were definatly not unsafe!!! :tsktsk:

Anyway, only a matter of time i suppose. Ive got away with it for a while but they seem to have recently clapmed down on timnts in my area now and the guy did say there about to spend money advertising the laws nationwide this year.

Never had any probs with mine (they are standard though)

don't feel to bad about it

the police in Weymouth(dorset) quite often have a day of pulling the modded motors over and having a good look at the road worthiness of the vechiles (no probs there)

heard stories of people having to rip the tint's out as there to dark

A friend of mine had an accident. A car went up the back of them, and the back bumper was damaged.

The car was still driveable just cosmetic damage the police attended the incident and help secure the damaged bumper to the car so he could drive it home. They then said he would have to remove his tints before he could leave the incident

I think the law states that a cetain percentage of light must get through the front windows and windscreen not sure now on how much it might be 70%?

Rears don't matter how dark they are!

But i used to hav a dark tint on my ST (boy racer days) and used to get pulled all the time, at the mo i have no tints on my Lexus but i will be having done but only very light! I have heard of these tint measure machines the cops have and its mainly traffic police ie T5s, Omegas etc

What these people don't understand is that peoplewith cars like ours who spend a lot of hard earned on them actually take more care and consideration with them than those in there little ClioCorsaNovaEscortTurbo!!

Anyway you can't argue with the law even if most of what they do is pick on the innocent motorist!

yeah but the prob is your moan when no one can ID the driver of a hit and run in your stolen car, because it's got tints (it's the extreme I know)

it works both ways

Well you say you've not had any trouble, but it looks like you're on the pavement in your pictures mate.

You haven't tinted the front one as well have you? :D

Yes Robin H i totally agree with you mate, i understand both points, and tbh sometimes driving with tints does make it harder to see when exiting minor to major roads and the like.

But as you say it does work both ways and when i said what i did in your quote i meant how police are always more likely to pull a car with aftermarket parts rather than a standard car whatever it may be or whatever the mods may be.

And i also wasn't digging at the hot hatch drivers as they too spend hard earned and some are very nice indeed!
