Is220d Sport Gearing

Recommended Posts

I test drove (and ordered) a new IS220d Sport yesterday.

I have been reading about the tall 6th gear on the IS, well it seems the final drive ratio on the sport has made a big difference. I was cruising around in 6th from 60 with no issues. This was a big plus for me because its not easy to do 70 on the M25 in the mornings, and I normally do about 60ish, so having 6th available is good ;)

Congrats on the purchase ... let us know what mpg you get once it arrives ... I got this sinking feeling that i should have waited and bought the sport

Not yet driven the Sport, but the very tall gearing in SE/torque means that there's less gear crunching needed anyway.

It's only the Diff which is different in the drivetrain.

For the car to feel comfortable at 6th, the combination of the torque, the gearing and the final drive mean that the engine would have been at around 1600-1700ish RPM in 6th at 60 in the Sport? Anything less then it would feel like 4th at < 30...(slow and lethargic, laboury etc)

If so that'll be the same as 5th in the SE at those speeds, so I doubt you'll be any better off economy wise. I suspect it'll feel faster, in any gear due to the diff ratio.

Around town is where the economy in the Sport could be worse.

Most of my driving is on the motorway around 60ish, so we'll see how the economy is. Now that I do a few more miles a year my right foot isn't as heavy as it used to be...

Can't wait though! Was so impressed with the car!
