I have a normal 1998 LS (if you could call an LS normal) fitted with 17" DHP alloys and 245/50 tyres. These have only been fitted to the car since July of last year but have developed serious wear on the the outside edge of both front tyres. At the current rate of wear I will need new tyres in under a year and less than 6000 miles!!

Not long before these wheels were fitted I had the tracking checked at the main dealer with the standard 16" wheels and 225/60 D8Z tyres fitted and all alignment figures were ok. I have not noticed any other problems with the cars handling or ride quality since fitting these wheels.

I have the following questions

1 Are the alignment figures for a standard 400 and DHP 400 the same?

2 has anyone had a similar problem with larger wheels, if did you fix it and how?

Thanks in advance

My thought is that your suspension is likely to be worn. Upper control arms wear out very quickly on these cars, as do lower control arms. I'd get your suspension checked over thoroughly, unless it has already been checked.

Hi,

What tyre pressures are you running in the fronts id say you might not have enough pressure in them.

chips..

The tyres all run at 34 PSI as advised by the Lexus dealer

The alignment/geometry positions are dependent on the wheels dimensions, change the dimensions then you will need to correct the geo to accommodate.

I am not to sure what you mean by this.

Yes the wheel is bigger in diameter by 1". But the wheels offset, width and overall diameter with the tyre fitted are the same as the standard wheel and tyre that they replace. the only real difference is the width of the tyre going from 225 to 245. Could the difference in width and profile 60 series down to 50 series make that much difference?

Sorry if i'm being a bit thick.

Both upper control arms and both reaction struts have been replaced by the main dealer. They advised that both lower arms and balljoint were ok.

Have a look here, it implies that your camber settings are not staying the same after the alignment has been done. When your alignment was done, do you know how much the camber was out?

Scroll down halfway on this one to the bit about camber

When the alignment check was done the camber angle, and all other angles were ok. The dealer did not change anything.
