Cam Timing

Right continuing the theme for the mods etc for the near future one of the next ones will be a set of adjustable cam gears. The idea is i am going to advance my timing slightly (4deg) to try and bring some more power down at lower revs. However this will be a first for me i have never played with cam timings before and i definately don't want it to be a hit and miss operation, especially with a big miss being a bent valve etc.

The basic plan will be to set pot 1 to TDC then change the OEM cams for adjustable ones, hopefully this will give me a good starting point after the change though i am in head scratching country. I intend to advance intake and exhaust by 4 deg.

SO any top tips or screams of horror would be appreciated especially if you have prior experience and know some arcane cam tuning black art

There does not seem to be much modding info available for us poor Mk1 GS owners. I would have a word with Mark at TDI or perhaps PM big Matt or dangerous-brain (usually posts in the Aristo section) or failing that try one of the many Supra performance bulletin boards.

looked at the supra boards unfortunately alot of turbos there who go for the cams too so it would change the amont of advance retard from what i gleaned factory settings are the best all round but seeing as i don't do 145mph very often i am willing to sacrifice my top end.

The main concern is going the wrong way and buggring the engine really i have grasped the theory but its the practical that worries me
