Urban Mpg Diesel 220

I had the use of a 220 diesel this morning. The car has 1300 miles on the ODO.

I was told the car had only been used around town. The average MPG showed 24 MPG. Is this average for in town? I would have expected at least 32 MPG from a manual diesel

I've got a 220d and i'm getting about 34mpg on stop/start driving. its got less than a 1000 miles on the clock so i'd assume that figure will only go up in the next few months. I've read a few stories about lower than expected economy in the 220d. Anyone out there got one with 50,000 on the clock yet??
