Lexus Recalls

Lexus has just announced that around 57,000 cars are being recalled to replace the driver's and front passenger's seatbelt assemblies.

Affected by the recall are 2nd-generation Lexus IS and 3rd-generation Lexus GS models built between July and December 2005. Although Japanese news accounts only mention the four variants sold in the Japanese domestic market (IS250, IS350, GS350, GS430), it's safe to assume that export-only IS220d and GS300 models will be affected as well.

Of the roughly 57,000 vehicles, about 29,000 vehicles will be recalled in North America; 11,109 in Japan; 4,000 in the United Kingdom; 9,800 in Continental Europe, and the remainder in other markets.

Curiously, diverse news accounts of the recall are hazy and somewhat contradictory as to what precisely the defect is. Apparently, the seat belts may not be pulled out or retracted appropriately due to a defective winding device. Lexus adds that there is no safety problem regarding their function of restraining the user's body in the event of a crash.

Since last September, Lexus has received 236 complaints involving the seat belts. Fortunately, no accidents have been reported due to the defect.
