Looking For A Fun Car

Recommended Posts

Having sold my MGB roadster a couple of years ago I am looking for a fun summer car.

I have a budget of £3k. Preferably looking for a 'running restoration' project.

I don't mind doing cosmetic paint repairs and minor mechanical work.

I would prefer something basic engine wise but with a bit of grunt. Parts have got to be readily available.

A convertible would be nice but I may consider a GT, coupe etc.

Any ideas anyone?

MX5

:D

That's a possibility and a 90's car would be more cost effective than an MGB.

But is it easily tuneable.

I'd rather keep away from turbos.

My MGB had a fast road engine (overbored 1800) with single weber and was quite quick for a 70's car.

Nissan (no joke) 300ZX (if you can find one).

My Mate had one of these babies in virgin white, boy it was a stunner!!

Just like this one: 300ZX

Not the cheapest to run, but it really will make you smile (it's almost a supercar).

PS - MX5's great, but a lady's vehicle...

PPS - forgot to add - my mates was very very reliable. 4 Years and only basic wear and tear stuff, though I recall the shockers were expensive! And you can get non turbo V6's which are the best (imports)

Calibra, Corrado, even an old Capri 2.8i, Fiat Coupe, Ford Puma, Ford Probe, lots of cheap coupes about..how about a 1988 Merc 560 SEC?

I already have a nice comfortable gas guzzler (AKA Mk1 GS Sport) and a frightenly fast Rover 827 V6 (yes beleive me!).

I quite like the prospect of an early MX5 but hate the pop-up headlights. I also have a soft spot for 70's British sports cars.

On my short list at the moment are:

Mazda MX5 (without pop-up headlamps)

Mk1 Cortina (must be a 2 door GT as I can't stretch to a Lotus)

Triumph Vitesse (with straight six and triple carbs)

MGB GT or Roadster (must have single Weber)

Mini Cooper (will be hard to find at around 3k)

Triumph TR6 (will be hard to find at around 3k)

Sumbeam Rapier (With the 1750 tuned motor)

Morris Minor (with Fiat twin cam conversion)

how about a pug 205 GTi, got one in my drive spent plenty on it just not got time to use it.

Had'nt really thought about the Pug 205, would that be the 1.6 or 1.9?

It would be the 1.6, but looks like the 1.9....

Westfield?

Unlikely to get one for three grand.

I have been tempted by building the @Lo-Cost' version based on Ford Escort Mk2 running gear and motor/box though.

It's got to be an MX5 for that budget.

It's the only car that's been mentioned that doesn't cost more than the value of the car to repair on a regular basis, and it's great fun.

I can't agree with you more on that front Mark.

Anyone know what year the pop-up lights stopped/started being fitted?

Unless your looking at being under the bonnet for more time than driving id stay away from most of the cars youve listed apart from the MX5,Mini and Tina.

Id spend my money on a MX5 if i was after trouble free motoring :)
