Funny how JC was raving about all the toys and futuristic stuff on the new S class tonight- 'cos I reckon nearly all of 'em are already on the new IS - if you go for the full package.

OK so it hasn't got forward looking infra-red vision, but radar controlled cruise / surround sound system / dvd / voice controlled gizmos / yep we got them :D So whats the big deal about the merc

I said the same to the Mrs.... I think TG was a bit kak tonight to be honest!

Tend to agree there mate......in fact I dont think any of the new series episodes have been up to much....pity as it was the only TV programme that I would ever moan about if I missed it - and always looked forward to the return of the series, suffering withdrawal symptons for a week or 2 after the series ends for the winter.Perhaps Its just me getting a little bored with the same old stuff?

Ill second that (how do you think they explained the damage to Porsche :o on returning there £70k car LOL

I also watched a dated series of Top Gear today ware all three presenters slated the SC430 as the worst car available on the road at that time.

Did anyone else see this? I dont see many SC430s on the road, Surely Top gear have been a bit harsh with their review or have they?

No didnt catch this one.....only thing I know about the SC430 is it looks cool, is made by Lexus, and I can't really afford to buy a new one, or I would. Although JC makes me laugh, and I agree with a lot of his viewpoints on many things, when it comes to his opinion of cars - he is in a world of his own :question: :duh: As for the porsche, I suppose the generally good review presented by hamster will more than compensate for a few bent panels :winky:

Well the comment on the reason why the variable speed limits are on teh M25 last week as being to only gather speed camera fines was soo far from the truth... it makes you question how much of the rest of the stuff he comes out with is rubbish as well!

Yeah i watched that one too maybe i was a bit nieve I thought the speed cameras on the M25 were fixed at 70 regardless off what it states on the overhead gantries

Although I have seen many cars exceeding the advised speed limits (including myself) ive never had any tickets and i commute the M25 often

Jiberjaber how is this far from the truth do you know something we don't. Although i do admit this seemed a bit of an outrages thing for JC to say

The "old" cameras do not enforce unless a speed limit aspect is correctly displayed in the AMI (overhead matrix sign) for that lane. So it it says 40MPH then it will be enforcing 40MPH. There are a couple of other factors like does the lane have an actual camer installed in the housing, does it have film and is the aspect correct / bulbs all OK etc.

The "new" cameras passed type approval for enforcing any speedlimit with a correct aspect for that lane, so the new cameras can enforce national speed limit (i.e. no speed limit displayed) as well as when there are restrictions. This is over the HADECS system which in essence is a digital system (c.f. the old cameras being wet film). The new cameras are not installed on the M25 (yet) but are on the M42 through the ATM section.

Anyway... what clarkson said was tosh. There is no magic switch to turn on the speed limits when the coffers are low!

The signs are set as part of the Variable Speed Limit section of the M25, driven from vehicle occupancy measurements every 500m from the MIDAS outstations monitoring each lane using inductive loops. These then alert the "system" when the average occupancy for a lane crosses over a threashold, this then, according to a predefined plan, will set speed limits leading up to where the occupancy "alert" was measured.

MIDAS was originaly designed to protect the rear of traffic queues from secondary accidents by slowing/warning approaching cars. It was coupled with variable speed limits (instead of advisory speed limits) for a trial on the M25 some years ago as a means of takling congestion. At the same time a trial was started on teh M27 for ramp metering.

Variable speed limits work to a point, look at the throughput on the M25 when the T5 widening works were on and everyone was forced to drive at 40MPH, through put actualy INCREASED. However, like all good systems, unless you can stop the surge and become saturated, it will be overwhelmed and this (simplified) is what happens in the variable speed limit sections when it all goes wrong. Metering the flow or closing access to the motorway is the only way to guarentee keeping the through put. Ramp metering is being rolled out throughout the UK motorway network. It is unlikley to hit the M25 at the moment due to a certain number of political issues which I can not discuss further ;)

It's worth noting that the variable speed limits on the M42 are there also for the safety factor when the section is operating in hard shoulder running mode.

I have waffled on about HADECS, ramp metering and ATM before on here, so the info is there if you want to find out more using the search facility :)

......bah you got me answering stuff about work on a Bank Holiday! shame on you!

Guys - you know why TG did what they did...?

It's to make up for the previous showing of the S Class when the radar didn't work and it slammed into the back of a car in the fog... remember that one?

MB got so much bad publicity because of that.

So far I have heard 3 excuses for why that happened...

1) The driver did not know that the distronic radar was off

2) The metal building the car drove out of got the system confused

3) Fog affected the workings of the radar system

The point is that MB invest millions in research and development, and need payback. That's why the show was pitched like that. I think they were under pressure to do it.

Some of the systems are patented by manufacturers and they hold them for ages to let car design evolve, like vegetable oil additives which allow you to run a diesel on Rape Seed oil. certain companies have patented that, since 1989!! So no one else can do it, though some companies now are flouting it and designing their own.

Can you imagine how much that could be worth in the future?

I do take the point though - the only "new" thing on that car was the Night Vision, but you can buy goggles from an army and navy store that'll do that for £000's less...

PS - the only other wow thing was the voice commands, make the Lexus ones with it's "nanny" look p@ss poor!
