Quick Quiz Question

Morning All,

I probably shouldn't publicly admit any driver errors but anyway here we go Past few months on 3 seperate occasions I've gone to put her into second gear and find i've been fighting with the gear box as it just won't go

Twice moving off from a roundabout and once turning a corner eventually after a few seconds (trying to get any gear) and my blood pressure comes back down ill find it and off we go again.

At first I put this down to driver error but since it's now happend again for the 3rd time im thinking again.....

I know the IS gearbox is indistructable

But could this be anything other than driver error something slipping or not quite engaging perhaps??????

Any input would be great

Thanks Guys

iirc, there has been some history with Lexus IS200 manual gear boxes being a bit iffy at going in to gear, never having a manual IS myself I have not had the experiance. Give a search on gearboxes etc a go to see what it brings up.

Should be enough light afternoon reading in that lot, I gave up looking, but if you search on "gear" and ignore all the "top gear" posts and work from the back forward, there are plenty more you might be able to have a look through.

Hope that helps :)

The last two or so links note a "notchyness" in getting in to 2nd gear, which might be the resistance you are having with you gear box...

Matt is selling a short-shift which may help, might be worth a PM to him to discuss.

How would I check if the Clutch is on it's way out or not?

also worth checking the clutch isn't on its way out.

Pull handbrake right up.

Put car in first.

Bring up clutch slowly and see if car will eventually cut out.

If not, then the clutch is slipping = "on its way out".

I used to have trouble getting it in second esspically when rev's where a bit higher, im not sure how but it eventually went away, might be i got used to it or i might have had a service around that time not sure might be worth having a garage look at it just in case

If you havnt sorted it, hope this helps

had this with an old car and i found it was the linkage cable was bodged onto the gearbox with a cable tie, so it wasn't 100% true at finding 2nd gear. (notchy and clunky). Maybe worth checking that all linkages are ok and possibly some lubrication.

Gear synchromesh??? don't know much about it but this was also mentioned before i found the cable tie.
