Hi guys. Got quite a dilemma. Happily driving down the M4 the other day, traffic travelling at 50 mph due to road works, then slowing whilst going up hill to around 30 mph. quite a gap between me and the BMW in-front. Apply my brakes to slow me down as he had stopped.... :tsktsk: ....WHERES MY BRAKES?!?! Then apply what i consider foot to the floor on my brake pedal, an alas i had braking power, but not what i consider full power, with abs, with ebd!!!!! Unfortunatley i had no choice but to welcome the bmw driver to the world of my IS200!!!! now got front end damage, and car is off the road for while whilst reapirs are done. has anyone had, or heard of any similar experiences, cos i'm at a loss at the moment with whether to think. what has happened.

What a shame not a nice thing to happen

sorry can't help but i'm sure some of the guy's will sort you out soon with some possible answers.

If you explain this to the insurance company they will investigate they log all complaints on their database they may be cotributing factors towards vehicle accidents

Good Luck

The only time I had anything like that was when I boiled the brake fluid in the front disc calipers of my Mini Cooper S (the original not the BMW). Bit of a shock as I approached a 90 degree bend at the bottom of a very steep hill, but I had been a bit over enthusiastic on the winding bends all the way down :whistling: .

Doesn't sound like your problem though, just sympathise with the shock of finding no means of stopping!

Has car been regularly serviced as brake fluid change is on the schedule every 20 or 30 thousand miles ( not sure which ), this is to stop it absorbing water and breaking down / boiling as Tango suggests.

Have you checked the level of the fluid in the reservoir and looked underneath for leaks? I believe all modern cars have dual circuits so if there is a fault you should still get braking on opposite corners.

Hi,

Sounds like the Brake Master Cylinder is at fault the rubber seals have failed.

Like Steve says its a dual system for safety, but the secondary system only works when the brake pedal is about 1 inch or so from the floor..

Sorry to hear of your troubles, least everyone was ok by the sounds of it.

chips..

A similar thing happened to me 2 weeks ago when I tried to stop at some traffic lights. I was just about standing on the brakes but the car carried on. I caught 2 cars as I sped round them, shot through the red light then managed to stop by pulling on the handbrake. Lexus say they can find no malfunction but are waiting for an independant engineer to come to inspect it. Did they find what the problem was with your car? Mine is a IS220d SE, not yet a year old.

Have had this before twice,

once for giving a car too much round some corners and got the pads too hot = motorway driving you wont get that.

second master cylinder was knackered, as suggested secondary system on modern cars.

scarey moment, glad your ok tho'

Hi just to say driving on the A5 towards M42 in my 06 is220d come to brake at lights , rock solid brake pedal, no brakes, cruise stuck on. Had to squeeze through 2 lines of cars got to the front clipped a bmw and drove into the back of a ford escort, ended up 90 degrees to the traffic no airbags went off. Driver in escort had to have roof cut off to get him out thankfully he had only cuts and bruises but unfortunately he had no insurance, tax or mot, awaiting inspection from police and lexus later this month. The worst thing is thinking 5 mins later i would have been on M42 not worth thinking about...

Had this weird experience over the weekend. Took a turn into a wrong street and tried to back out onto the main road. Road was sloping down on the reverse. Time to stop and shift to Drive for moving forward. Alas! No brakes. Tried to pump the brakes. Brake pedal was all the way down with no impact on the wheels. As i was rolling slowly down the road in reverse and with no vehicles behind me, i shifted the gear to park to stop with rock and roll. I was puzzled with what had just happened. Engine had stalled - probably with shifting to park. Tried to move back to reverse gear and again the same thing. No brakes. shifted to park and stopped again. Called Lexus roadside assistance. Flat bed arrives in 45 min. Tow guy applied the tow rod and i casully tell him to check the brakes and voila, the brakes are back. I drove the car back to my home a short distance away. Taking it to dealer tomorrow. I have a feeling that they are going to say that everything is OK. But, i know the bewilderment i felt during this experience, :shutit: was real. Will update with what the service guys say. Mine is 2008 IS 250 that is barely 2 months old.

When i bought my car, the brakes were like this - you had to push the brake pedal deep to the bottom for the brakes to bite. In my case it was a problem with the front calipers - I think the piston got stuck and didn't apply the braking force to the front pads. And inside the car it felt also as if the brakes were not bleeded properly.

I had brake failure on my 99 gs 300 at 72000 last year Lexus told me it was because it was a high mileage car and so the master cylinder unit must be worn out ???? the replacement cost will be in the region of £2000 That is what i paid I have read somewhere this is a known problem but Lexus refuse to admit to this as this would be bad for their image If anyone else has had this problem Please let us know on this site I would be interested to see how many more people have been fobbed of by Lexus UK
