hadn't been to hatfield galleria for a while so i thought of taking a drive down there yesterday evening.

got on the A1(M) hitchin/stevenage junction, sped up to 70mph, suddenly 1 mile before junction 7 (stevenage), snap whizzzzzzzzzzz, car conked out

rolled over to the hard shoulder to have a look, had a mate with me who was a mechanic who had a quick look & told me the cam belt seemed to have snapped

& looking at the speed he reckons it may have damaged the engine

Ouch.... sounds like bad news..

the mileage is on 91,000 on a 2000 W plate

what is this all about

Might be something to do with the cylinders coming up and iether hitting or not hitting the valves.

Only ever lost a belt 1 time (touch wood), all i needed was to put a new belt on it (old for OHC 2l engine......)

a non interferance engine is an engine taht is designed in a such a way that even if the cam belt snaps then the pistons will not hit the valves, so avoiding engine damage

Don't know if the 1G-FE is non-interferance or not, seems to be the jury is out on that one.

You could fit a new cam belt and do a compression test, if you get good compression on all cylinders all is OK :D

Alternative is take the head off and have a look.
