Running In A New Is220d Sport - Tips?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

What are your tips (or those from Lexus) for running in my 220 DIESEL when it arrives? What have any other diesel owners done, or been advised to do - just the usual varying RPM and speeds for 1000 miles or so?

ALSO, anyone done an early oil change @ say, 1000 miles? I know my Impreza certainly had to have a 1000 miles oil service from new.

I've asked this many times - the dealers say go and enjoy!!

I say run it in: The 220d is very very tight. It takes a good 2000 miles to loosen, and won't be fully loose until at least 10,000 miles.

Basically don't labour the engine and stay below 66% of the max RPM (approx 3500rpm) max.

Don't just drive at constant revs for the first 250 miles (i.e. motorways). Give it a variety and don't idle the engine too long. Keep checking your oil.

Slowly increase rev's from 1000 - 2000 miles. I woul keep it under 4500 rpm until 5000 miles on the clock.

Change the oil between 1000 and 5000 miles....if you think you want to.

PS - remember - you're also bedding brakes & tyres etc, so don't brake too hard!!! And don't even attempt 6th gear until you've got 1500 miles!

Thanks for that. 6th gear on the sport is achievable at 50+MPH though - that is one of the main reasons (as well as the car I'm coming from) for getting the Sport diesel.

I will certainly take it easy on the car for a while. I will undoubtedly take a while to loosen up and achieve its' potential.

I'd recommend running in too, and with a turbodiesel in particular as I thought they benefitted even more than petrol engines from being run in properly.

Thanks Paradroid.

Anyone got tips on changing the oil early - should I leave the first oil in longer to let the car bed in, or replace it?
