I know that a number of members have replaced their shocks and bushes.

Has anyone done it themselves?

How easy is it?

Any pitfalls?

Do I need a spring compressor?

Where is the best place to buy them?

Cheers

Dave

<edit> 09:32 Just ordered a pair of shox from BuyPartsBuy for £113.13 inc Vat and del </edit>

Which bushes?

I think I've seen them referred to as Void bushes

Wheel off - nsr - a bar goes from the body to the hub area at (on a clock) about 10 o clock - the hub end is waving in the breeze!!!

But the bushes are not my immediate concern, the suspension bottoms out at the slightest bump so I assume the shocks have gone.

Here is a guide on how to take the shocks off an IS200, might be of some help :)

GUIDE

;)

Thanks for that Noel, I had a look around the KB last night and saw that, I'm sure its not complicated on an LS, I just wanted anyones knowledge that had done it before (if they had!!!).

On the face of it, it looks simple (they are the other way up on an LS, the springs are at the top)

Cheers :D

Dave,

I just posted in this section with a link to a company that sells the polyurethane void bushes in the US. If you go to Lexus, you will have to replace the hub itself as the void bush is not sold separately, and that costs an arm and a leg. If your void bushes are worn, you will notice the rear end hops when travelling over a bump in the road as you are in a corner, a bit like a kangaroo!

Get the suspension checked out, and see where the most wear is. Your control arm bushes may be worn too, and those can be expensive to replace if you have to replace the entire control arm. If you end up doing a complete suspension overhaul, you won't get much change from a few grand mate!

Yep agreed Maneesh, but at the moment the shox are my main concern. I tow a 1500kg caravan on a regular basis and last weekend noticed the suspension bottoming and since then it bottoms at any opportunity! Obviously the standard shocks last and last but die very quickly at the end!

As I am towing to the south of France in 2 weeks, I need to get them sorted pronto, the bushes can wait till I'm back!!

My local garage replaced the shocks on my '91, so can't comment from first hand experience, but they did say that they were a real pig and the springs were especially difficult to compress.

I took the rear seat out myself to save on labour costs - that wasn't difficult just took a bit of time. Made me realise why the cars last so well - the quality of the interior trim fixings are much better than on lesser cars.

I must say when I read your post I thought "Back seat?? What on earth for???" then I had a look this morning and yep- thats where the tops are, under the parcel shelf.

So I did the same (took it out) and agree - so well engineered!

Oh well thats half an hour I wont have to pay for!!!

Getting them done Monday PM.

Maneesh - you are right - they are really small and light!

Hi

Replaced all 4 shocks and springs for lowered ones on mine and the front were easy the rears had me swearing a bit but did them once i knew which control arm to take off to drop the suspension arm and yes you will need spring compresses

make sure you loosen the top nut at the top of the shock before you start

took me a couple of hours on one side and 40mins on the other

cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, I got the rear springs and shocks replaced at Trac-Art (Jap Specialists) in Ashford Kent, and it has made such a difference to the ride quality - I just didnt realise how much it had deteriorated! When they did it they commented that the discs should be replaced - so how easy was that? No problem, probably the easiest discs I've ever replaced!!

Now just get the front springs and shocks (and prob discs) done after my hols and all will be well.
