Leaking Coolant Overflow Bottle

Recommended Posts

Well, the title says it all really!

Mine has been leaking for a while, I've replaced the O ring with the same size, with a thicker, and also with 2 smaller, nothing works for longer than a couple of runs  .

Soon as it gets hot, it just seeps out around the level sensor. I am assuming there must be a hairline crack that I cannot see. I only lose about a cupfull over a month or so, so its not life threatening, but its a pain and the leaking coolant smells and goes over all the clean (ish) engine bay!

Before I go and take out a mortgage with Lexus to replace the tank :crybaby: , anyone experienced and solved this before or is it a one off?

Cheers all :D

Dave

Dave I also had this on my mk2 ls.

was seeping out from the sensor, replace the whole overflow bottle and the problem was resolved.

Was around £20 from a guy breaking one on ebay.

I would try this first

Seems like a common problem. I corrected mine by applying some clear silicone around the sensor cap.

Thanks guys, I'll try the silicone treatment first, then maybe go for a spare one if that doesnt work!

I had the same thing on my Mk1. The weak point seems to be where the black top is welded to the clear sides. Tried all sorts of things, including PTFE tape round the level sensor thread. The only thing that fixed it was a new tank and radiator cap from Lexus. About £100 all in (fitted by me). An easy job, but don't waste time on s/h spares. Cut your losses and get a new tank.
